I agree with REXman; perception and reputation of the 'hero' model will drive interest and sales, so it's facts that get reported (let's say lap times in this case) which help establish a car's performance reputation.
Just look at how Nissan used its Nordscheife lap time to sell the GTR. It may not affect sales of 5dr models but could affect sales of whichever car becomes the hero model of the range.
Though it's up to individuals to do their research, test drives etc to make the rational or irrational decision that fits their needs! :p
