Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Okays... two things.

The link you just posted was to the Stage III Golf R. It is not using the Stage 2 Carbonio intake. The APR Stage 3 upgrade comes with a new MAF Housing Pipe and Intake. It's significantly different to the MK6 TSI Carbonio intake (check it out again side by side). The Stage 3 hardware won't fit to a K04 turbo - the gear is way too large.

You can't even fit the MK6 TSI intake (Stage 1 or 2) as it's not designed for the K04 or the MAF that the Golf R runs.

As I mentioned before, there are products out there from numerous companies that allow for the use of a full replacement intake, but you'll need to leave the engine cover off. Also, there are varying degrees of success with matching them with a tune. The K04 engine cars are apparently very sensitive to changes to the MAF position.

I posted about a range of intakes for the Golf R here, and then there was further discussion on the next page, including information on a future "Stage 2 style intake" from APR for the Golf R... and intake which still has no release date yet (APR USA is refusing to answer the ETA question in the USA forums either).

      • [QUOTE=Lucas_R;651293]They look good but you must have bought the only one the guy had as there are no more on his ebay store. On the other hand, he has VW cargo nets for a good price if anyone is interested.

        • Apologies for the stupid question but what kind of coat should I be getting to protect my car? I've seen a few things like the Opticoat but don't know which one I should be getting! Thanks!

          • You should really have a look in the Bodywork/Trim & Detailing. But to summarise:
It depends on what YOU want to achieve, and how much effort you want.

The absolute best "motorshow shine" will be from no coat, just lots of hardware and using a great wax etc. But then you will be prone to swirl marks, stone chips, and lots of hardware (wax lasts ~3 to 6 months max).
You can get a different type of shine which will lasts for 12 months and give even better protection from a nano-sealant such as Nanolex. You're still prone to swirls if you're not careful, and stone chips...
Opti-coat is a professionally applied "hard clear coat". It's hydrophobic to repeal water and release dirt and grim easier, meaning your washing routine should be quicker and easier. As it's harder than the standard clear coat, it is less prone to swirl marks and stone chips (though they'll still happen). As it's just like a clear coat, you can then put your choice of wax or sealant routines over it. You just have to avoid abrasive polishes.
Ventureshield Stonegard/3M Paint Protection Film is a physical barrier against stone chips and other contaminents. It's just like wrapping a book with contact. Whilst it's "invisible" from a more than a few feet away, as it is a "plastic film", it has lots of little imperfections from the wrapping process. But it's not prone to swirls etc. You'd typically put this on the front of the car as it will stop stone chips. The stones can still cause a dent, but the paint will be intact. You can apply opti-coat and sealants over the top of Ventureshield...

            • A quick note to be careful fitting - the piece in the "V" of the VW is slightly and ever so slightly too big. Trial fit and trim first. Excellent product and looks great. Great ebayer also, replaced my sticker after I stuffed it fitting it - sent photo's of badly fitting sticker. Don't make my mistake and trim it for a perfect fit if required.

I have also fitted an RNS 510 GPS with video in motion - excellent item - keeps co-driver quiet for hours.

Bluefin remap has made R perform like it should have - won't elaborate on prior lack of performance for obvious reason

              Cargo Net

Under Seat drawers - genuine over counter - cheaper to buy from UK with delivery (about $200) which is really stupid, ordered drawers from local dealer a couple of hours before I received email on price from UK

Stll waiting for Work Wheels - special order, due early next month. I am sure will be worth the 2 month wait.

That's for that Corey. Very good summary! The Opticoat on top of the Ventureshield sounds good.

Going to head over to the Bodywork/Trim and Detailing forum to have a look!

                  • I bought the RNS 510 off ebay brand new with the video in motion included (AU$950 + AU$110 delivery) from Ireland. It is something that can be activated in the RNS 510 but I don't know how. I have read some different charges/costs for video in motion and it can cost up to $500 depending on company.

One thing that all should remember that it is illegal to have a video in view of the driver. Most video units I have read about only work with the handbrake on.

It may be possible to power the wire to the unit from the hanbrake switch wire to the RNS 510. This will simply allow video in motion, but it is still illegal.

Does anyone has recommendation where else could I source these cheaper? I tried looking at ECStuning, OEM & etc and it seems like they don't have these available.
Has anyone bought the stainless steel VAGLink version. For $40US for a set of 4 it sounds very cheap, I am worried if they fit though. From the pics it looks like they might even be intended for installation over the plastic trim *inside* the door??

                        • Correct... they go over the plastic trim. Someone on this forum has them.. there are photos somewhere, maybe in the photos thread?

                            • Gave the car a wash today and this happened when I sponged the front grill. WTF?

Looks like the GTI badge was never installed right. It is now connected by one clip only behind the letter I, when it should have 3 clips.

                              What should I do?
                              1. Just go ahead and de-badge the GTI?
                              2. Go back to dealer to get it fixed? Meantime, tape it back using double-sided tape.
