Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The Golf R's run 1.2 bar of pressure form the factory (about 16psi) so your boost guage will need to show more than 20 to be of any use. Go for the 30 PSI one.

On a happier note I installed my OSIR pedal set with just a torx screw driver - looks great although it doesnt sit absolutely perfect when you line it up perfect.. If you line it up a fraction off it sits perfect!

And I got my boost gauge holder for the vent - just deciding on a)which gauge to get (probably just the Autometer Cobalt series 30PSI (do I need that much or is 20PSI enough for a car up to STG 2+?)) b) Where to get it installed c) mechanical or electrical

Almost definitely getting mechanical just cause I like the way they behave - does anyone here no how to wire it, have a diagram for the R to give to my mate to install?

    • What performance upgrades can I get for my mk6 2.0 TDI? Most of the upgrades seem to be biased towards TSI engines.

      • Hi there - a couple of things:

Performance upragdes != accessories (this thread).
Why'd you go for the TDI if you wanted performance?
I found this - APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.
You could also get SprintBooster to improve throttle response (not performance but very noticeable).

Surely we can do something similar to the R's engine cover should we change the intake pipe right?

          • Wow - there's probably one downside to owning that though. You'd go back to the dealer at the end of the day after booking the car in to be serviced, only to find the technician still drooling over it and not completing any work

That's a trimmed MKV TFSI engine cover. You had to trim your original MKV TFSI engine cover, and then purchase the carbon fibre pieces and stick them on. The carbon fibre bits are rather expensive though

For the MK6 you can do something like this instead:

You can also get carbon fibre inserts for that engine cover, but again, they're rather expensive (US$375, over twice the US$185 of the engine cover itself!) and they retain the original Audi logo.

The Forge Product Page for the Twin Take says that it fits the Audi S3 with the intake integrated into the engine cover, so chances are that it would probably fit the Golf R, even though it's not mentioned. You should probably contact them and confirm, as many of these companies are often slack at updating their websites.

Thanks for that. So what's your opinion on the twin take? Would you go this,or the gruppe m,or neither?

                    • I think that you should probably first decide which ECU vendor you're going with, and then use an intake which is supported by them.

                      • Well, visited Guy and James at Harding performance here in Brizvegas yesterday to get my first Mods.

Carbonio CAI, High Pressure FP, and a stage 2 Tune (version 2.3) updated only last week by APR.

Also had Guy do some VCDS coding adjustments while they had the car plugged in (gratis of course, thanks Guy)

                        Result?

                        Really good!
Big differences seem to be A) down low in D, i noticed it pulling up hills in 6 when before it would have changed down a gear. (this obviously due to the torque increase)
                        B) Greater surge of power between 3,500-5,500 RPM (very noticeable)
                        c) Off the mark, markedly quicker

Had some young fellas pull up next to me in their Nissan GTS Turbo rice burner last night. Within 60 feet I was two body lengths ahead.
                        Loved it!

I'll post some pics of the CAI asap, looks good.

                          • He'd have to if he's got a Stage 2+ tune on there.. otherwise he'd have a Stage 1+ tune on it (ECU + HPFP)

                            • Well,
I could be wrong and if Guy sees this post I hope he confirms,
However James said it was a stage 2 (maybe I missheard and he said second stage meaning stage 1 Plus) due to the HPFP.
Next mod would be a downpipe and then a Intercooler. but I don't think I will go any further as I am happy with the performance.
I might get the haldex upgrade as Guy reckons it is the best handling mod. ( better results than sway bars etc as it changes the dynamics of the drive train)
As Guy stated to me yesterday, the R is a front wheel drive and it doesn't send power to rear untill it feels front wheels slipping.
The Haldex upgrade allows more power to rear all the time to give a better dynamic and reduce understeer, which we all know this beast has a fair bit of.
