  • I picked up a new MY13 GTI a few weeks ago, and sure enough it has the rattle. Going to let the dealer know about it when it goes in for its check up in a couple of months.

Minke I'm sure Urs probably has it too.

    • ^ if you drive with the window down at about 2,000rpm you can hear it rattle. So thats a good test for you. Obviously doing it at low speed to minimise wind noise.

      • Had my 15k service yesterday and I quoted the TSB and part numbers found elsewher on the site, asked if they could have a look at it for me. i was not expecting to be told they have ordered the clip and can I book the car in to have it fitted, well done Garry Crick Maroochydore. No questions, no denial by the service manager, just a great result I didn't expect so easily.

        • 118tsi having rattle

I am not sure if I am posting in the right thread. My 118 tsi has been having this rattling sound coming from the engine area (passenger side), which mostly occurs at speeds between 20 & 30 kmph. It resembles the sound that a loose nut in a tin can makes, when shaken. I have been complaining to Burwin about the problem, but they weren't able to reproduce it. Took my car for the 50k service and I was able to reproduce the sound when I went for a drive with their foreman.

They acknowledged the sound, but weren't able to localise it. Instead, they suggested to go through the engine assembly in detail if the sound increases or my engine stalls!!

The DSG shudder was rectified during 40k service, when they changed the clutch assembly. I love the car, except for this rattle. Is it similar to the issue in GTI?

          • I believe the wastegate rattle was specific to the GTI engines, although the sound you describe is very similar. Might be worth a look..

            • Thank you. When I mentioned the rattle to a Burwin technician, the first thing he asked me was, "do u have a GTI?". Probably, mine is a odd one out and I guess I could recommend the same clip to them?

              • Contrary to what I said above I believe it does affect other TSI engines, although I understood they were all from the EA888 family, whereas the 118TSI is an EA211 engine.. so unsure whether its the same issue or not (or whether I am 100% correct in this).

The wastegate rattle was rpm dependent, if yours is speed dependent I would still think it is something else?

Unfortunately the parts are not compatible at all - the GTI and 118TSI engines are quite different in this respect. I'd be surprised if what you're describing is a wastegate rattle, to be honest - anything turbo-related (or indeed engine related) is going to be rpm and/or load dependent, not road speed dependent.

                    • Had my new Golf GTi in at the dealer for an unrelated matter, however interesting to note that this clip was already fitted. Dealer assumes at factory. Car delivered 14th Jan 2013.

                      • Hi all,
new member who has just made the leap from a long time love of Jap cars and stepped into a MY13 GTI.
I have this wastegate rattle. Now this is my first car which still has factory warranty and im not too sure what i am able to claim under warranty, and if this rattle can be fixed under warranty free of charge?
I recently went into the VW Ringwood dealership and cant say my experience was a good one. Quite the opposite to be honest. The person in the service dept was nothing but rude and arrogant, and unhelpful.

I went in and mentioned to a guy in the service/parts dept that my GTI has a rattle which from what i have read and researched is a known issue with the GTI's.
I gave him the TPI #, and his response was first of all he has never heard of any wastegate rattle issues and i shouldnt believe what i read on the net. Secondly he said that the TPI details i gave him mean nothing to him, and third he asked if my car drives and performs normally which i said it drives perfect other than this annoying rattle. He then said "so what is your problem then"? After this i just got up and walked out quite thrown back at this guys severe lack of service, understanding and plain rudeness.
                        MY questions are:
                        - SHould i expect this kind of servcie and response from most VW dealerships?
                        - Should this be fixed under warranty at no costs?
                        - What should i say and who is the appropriate person to speak to?

My folks have bought several cars from this dealership hence why i went in the first place. The **** that i spoke to said i can book it in for them to have a quick look which will cost me $300!!!!
Just after some advice on what to do. I know i get get the little clip from ECS and do it myself. Which after my experience seems like a better option?

                        Comment

                        • Just buy the clip and install it yourself - thats what i did. it fixes 90% of the noise. Its a tight fit to get the clip on there, but can be done.

i'll have my car jacked up this wkend, so i can take a few photos of the clip if you need it.

PS - the treatment from the dealership is pretty typical of VW.....not their strongpoint.

EDIT - here is a pic of the wastegate clip installed on my Mk6 GTI. This is looking from under the car and the back of the engine.

that customer service advisor must be sacked. he has no people or customer care skills and we normal people would have no single clue why he was employed to do what he does at vw service in the first place. he is a shame to the company!

I bought the clip from aliexpress for around usd $17 delivered.

That type of behaviour is utterly unacceptable - don't let it slide. I'd call the dealership or check their website for the contact details of the dealer principal or senior service manager, and send an email or written letter to them, describing the above and naming the individual in question. If you don't get a suitable response (sincere apology, offer to make things right), then contact VW Australia and report the incident - it may not get a better outcome for you, but the incident will be noted and considered when VWA is looking at rewarding good dealer performance.

To answer your other questions: the TPI stipulates that the replacement should be free (parts and labour) when a customer raises the issue - it should not cost you a cent. If you want to get it done right away, speak to another dealership and maybe mention your poor customer service experience at the same time; a good service department might use this as an opportunity to gain some new ongoing business.

That's a lot better than $80 odd through ECS!!!! More than happy to fit it myself. Just pretty shocked at the "lack" of care from the service dept at this dealership.
Ill never be going back their again for anything i can tell you. As mentioned my folks have bought 2 new cars from this dealership and they wont be going back either becuase of this. Problem for this dealership is...... the manager/boss really should find out the collateral damage and loss of future revenue/business his employee has caused.
