My observation:

The best way to increase the performance of your Golf R is to go away on Holidays for 10 days and get a Suzuki Swift hire car.

Get back in the R and you have a rocket.

Yes.. very pleased with the result, the new performance is growing on me now.. especially the bottom end and gear changes

Observation for today

Withdrawal symptoms from giving up smoking are pitifully insignificant compared to what I am experiencing from my R being at the smash repairs.

Has anyone made use of the storage area under the cargo floor ?

The R is shallower and as I don't have my car right now, I was wondering if anyone with an R has modified the foam to fit gear - how deep is it etc ?

I want to cut out bits of the foam to store detailing products etc.

I don't tow my garage to QLD

As far as weight goes, yep, an extra 1.5 kg. I dropped 20kg so overall a win

Sensible place is under the boot floor

I know a few who had done this to MKV's but the R has less depth

Will wait until I get the car back

Just had a quick look for you while looking at why I have a two stage opening sequence suddenly when trying to open the hatch.

R/H side is about 140mm at it's deepest and the L/H side only 100mm.

I push the emblem in and the hatch moves 5mm or so but hasn't unlatched. Let emblem go and repeat then the latch is free and I can lift the hatch. I get the release noise both times.
