Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yep, as adzy indicated, that makes much more sense.
It's also the conclusion we've come to each time it's been bought up.

You have 3 cars, all built from the same platform - Golf R (RRP $48,490+), Audi S3 (RRP $69,000+) and Audi TT-S (RRP $97,364+). So due to the car pricing structure (and tax structure) of this country, the TT-S is substantially more than the S3. So when the engine used in the S3 went from 188kw to 199kw around the world, Australia decided to leave it at 188kw to create more of a differentiation between it and the TT-S. So when Volkswagen come along with the R, they can hardly release it with 199kw and have the S3 still at 188kw.

Anyway... if you're concerned about reliability - don't upgrade. Or make sure the intercooler is part of your upgrade.

Not to mention all the other mods... This car hammers.. Now I really know what it's capable of..
As did I yesterday after finally getting to meet up with Fab. It would be a thanks combined with you bastard*. His wife is probably gonna setup a ticket booth as people should be paying for rides LOL!

There really is no way to explain how much different the mods have made the R. It just has power EVERYWHERE! From the passenger seat, it felt transformed. From the drivers seat, you get confirmation of it. Was most impressed with all the extra power much earlier in the rev range, there is no hesitation from cruising when you punch it. I had a few XR6T's and honestly Fab's R now has that sort of midrange instantaneous power.

The exhaust and induction noise is significantly louder on full song but still respectable while cruising. The DSG pops are now serious farts and love the burble on lift off as well.

I'll do without the catback and air intake stuff if they aren't needed but pump, frontpipe and tune are now in reality....essential

You can add me to the sceptics for this sprintbooster device but on/off, there is a noticeable difference. It could be doing something as simple as adding 25% throttle input on top of what the foot is doing so partial throttle is a becomes more than 50% but no idea. Leave it upto someone else to do a more scientific test.

As for the "you bastard*" part, I think my foot put a dent in the firewall trying to push the accelerator down more on my way home.

REX, if it couldn't run an easy 12, I'd be highly surprised.

If the LC could be adjusted to be a bit more savage on take off then who knows how much quicker. A mate demo'd an RS5 recently and the LC with its DSG held revs at 6k and then felt like it just side stepped the clutch. It freaked us both out because we were expecting the same ease in that the R does. Given it was wet and the back stepped out 1.5m, was even more astonishing. Hmm wonder if that V8 will fit in the front of the R

And engine/diff/DSG oil coolers etc etc. Don't think you'll have a problem on the street, it's pretty hard to keep the foot buried in a stock car for long let alone one with much more power. Regular track work, I'd be doing all the reliability stuff before more power.

      • Another reason for detuning for Oz is probably also down to issues with lower quality fuels running in high compression cars like the R that may be used over here. You would think using 98RON like BP Ultimate etc all the time then the chance of knocking etc and damage to pistons is greatly reduced.

          • DaveR ... Exactly what I would have written if I had bothered to write a review on Fabs R

The other noticeable increase in sound is the noise from the turbo is a lot more noticeable with the new down pipe from the turbo.. Prrrp chrrrp

and yet people will still cheap out on fuel. if it has to do with fuel quality, lower octane fuels in europe all have the same quality as a fuel like bp 98 has. in terms of sulphur and some other thing i can't remember.
