Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Looks familiar tho. Is it a rehash of an old article from somewhere else? Doesn't make sense I mean 3.5/5 for safety?? Cmon...

    Is he avin a laff???
The review is actually REALLY POSITIVE, so some people have already called out the rating in the comments section of the article.
The ratings are the same as in the GTI vs R article, for which there was also much critism. It's as if they've accidently put themselves in a corner, and are now just being stubborn.

Yeah thats what so stupid, the article is a glowing report on the R yet the score doesn't match. That other GTI vs R article they give the R 3.5/5 for safety while the GTI gets 4.5/5. Ridiculous when the R has awd and the GTI is only fwd. Then for price, practicality and presentation the R is also 3.5/5 vs 4.5/5 for the GTI. The R is alot less than the old R32 used to be and in comparison to an Audi S3 is a bargain so should at least get a 4/5 in that area you would think. Also they gave the R 4.5/5 for behind the wheel but in the latest article its 4/5. I mean why even bother writing a review like that when in the end you are going to give out nonsense scores that in no way reflect what you have written in your assessment?

What you could be experiencing could be the built-in throttle delay in all new cars (as a safety feature) instead of lag. Something which the sprint booster will cure.

              • I might be a little cynical, but I'm not sure I'd spend $350+ for what is the equivalent of a heavier right foot

                • As a patient R to be owner I can't help but be concerned about those that have now taken delivery and are less than pleased with the DSG operation. It is confusing as hell as the reading all claims it is an amazing piece of kit and the future of gearboxes.. I hope this is all about nitpicking at infrequent occurrences of an otherwise perfectly well operating piece of engineering.

I wouldn't be too concerned mate, i've had the one problem which thankfully hasn't happened again, but the good certainly outways the bad.

I get that gist, it is more about overcoming these gear timing changes forcing folk to utilise the paddles which has me bothered. Are folk experiencing this in everday driving or utlising it in anger..

                      • The DSG has a normal drive mode which is as eco as possible, and always maintains as high a gear as possible
Then it has a Sport mode, which is not far away from being the total opposite - very aggressive, wants to get near the red line before changing, etc.

I'm guessing most of us enthusiasts prefer something a bit more in the middle of two (some closer to either extreme), and that's why I've been using Manual mode a lot more recently, which is great. DSG works very well, so don't worry - it's just a bit different and takes some getting used to.
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

SFX, don't start second guessing, my friend. DSG for most of us is a new driving experience and like us all will take you some time to get use to. There are so many variants to the system, finding (knowing) the one the suits you the best in the conditions you are driving in is part of the learning curve and fun. A great man told me not to long ago to be patient, work with what I have and enjoy.....
                          I am, i do, i will.

                          • Tks Will,

If you can remember it wasn't so long ago you were in the midst of angst about the arrival of your new beast and I am still there. You had the luxury of being one of the first and there were known concerns, now there are more about and the experience IRL is coming online you have to start dismissing the "journalists" and listen to those who actually have them and going through the motions.

I am very patient and will enjoy but you have to admit there is a lot of chatter about the DSG and its mating with the R 2.0 engine that makes you wonder.

                            • Yes and I've posed some questions-observastions to the forum, all answered by the generous folks here. Once I realised (was told by Ryan R) I could control the shifting, i was back on track knowing I had bought the car that best suited my wants, now, with no regrets or reservations. actually thats a lie, I wanted a z4, but didn't want to spend 135k to get what i wanted...
Voora1ZN wrote that the DGS wasn't liked because it didn't have a manual clutch. WTF? DSG gives you all that you want and more, unless of course you expected a freakin clutch pedal then you're ShiOutOfLuck...
Just got back from another day on the backroads west of the Sunshine coast. My wife took over the driving from Montville on through Witta, Woodford yadda yadda. Had to 'ask' if i could drive the last 20 minutes, LOL.... she threw it in S, haven't seen a smile on her face that big since last Saturday night, but thats another story....
remember, the chatter could be from a disgruntled Renault RS owner who has just now realised he has made the worst mistake of his life.

It is not about a having heavier right foot...even if you stomp on the throttle, the built-in delay still prevents the car being as responsive as one would like/expect it to be.
