Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It's the side that it's required by law to be on (just like the fog light is required by law to be on the drivers side). This isn't just a Golf or a VW thing. Plenty of other cars/makes, including Subaru, have them on a single side too. It's probably just the first car that you've had where there is only a single light.

As for the DSG being in 5th at 45kph. I can confirm this is not an issue and is by design. It won't hurt your engine etc. Even performance cars need to try and be green. Anyway - no point discussing that in multiple different threads... if you're really concerned yours isn't normal, then contact your dealer.

Don't worry Pepe I do this too, though I've got better at judging the fully closed position and don't need to look anymore You can also listen for the gust of air trying to squeeze into the cabin when you're driving along with the roof partially open!

          • How else would the 2.0l Golf R be more powerful/faster than the 3.2l V6 Golf R32?
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

Because VW have adopted the TSI name for most of their current range. They cant have their hero car looking to be outdated even though the engine in it is a generation older.

Because Volkswagen dropoped the F a while ago, so instead of TFSI it's now just TSI.

                • VWVortex.com - BASIC TSI INFO/ACRONYMS/FAQ

                  TSI (Turbo-Stratified Injection)
                  FSI (Fuel-Stratified-Injection)

Some major differences from the FSI to TSI include:

                  - chain driven belt
                  - fuel/engine management
                  - components in the intake system
                  - oil filter and oil dipstick relocated
                  - improved PCV system (proved to be problematic in the FSI)
                  - compression ratio lowered to 9.6:1
                  - more balanced cam shafts in the center of the block on both sides
                  - down pipe
                  - fuel efficiency (debatable)
                  - better emissions
                  - more 02 sensors on exhaust system

                  Comment

                  • Heh - the fuel efficiency isn't really debateable - the TSI in the MK6 GTI is definitely better fuel efficiency than the TFSI in the MKV GTI, and the "PCV system" which was apparently problematic in the TFSI ends up handling things better around the track (in the R) than the TSI (in the GTI) !

But yeah... that's basically the summary.

                        • Can anyone in the Sydney area advise on a good rim repairer? My front, right 19" Talladega has a slight buckle from a pothole. I called up the local dealership about a possible replacement and they're looking for around $1,500 for a single rim!!!!!!!!! To make things worse the side-wall of the rubber has a little split! I'm quite concerned about driving it now......

                            • Air Filter, where is it?

A bit of a noob question but where is the air filter box on the R. Opened up the bonnet today and found quite a bit of sand in the engine bay after driving through a bad sandstorm the other day.
I thought i'd check out the air filter/box to see how that coped but have no idea where it is, i'm guessing its under the big plastic engine cover somewhere..
