Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • By the looks of things, the R/ MK6 GTI may now have the Pirelli IC as well (confirmation is needed on this). The difference in thickness between the Pirelli and S3 IC is 1cm. And conclusions made was that the increase in performance was neglible and that it was money better spent on the APR IC instead. So as a cheap alternative to upgrading to the APR IC (with all the cost and trouble involved in removing the original), the Forge twincooler was recommended. Hence, why I mentioned it over the upgrade to the S3 IC.

    Thanks, fixed that up.

Yep - the S3 intercooler is definitely wider than the Golf R/GTI intercooler.
This is why some people used to upgrade their GTI's to the S3 intercooler as a cheap alternative to the aftermarket products.

But back to the original point of all this. Whilst I've heard good things about the Forge twin-cooler, since the Golf R's IC is not the same or as capable as the S3 IC, to me it makes more sense to address that deficiency first before adding 2nd intercoolers.

    • So has anyone removed the ugly front number plate holder from their R yet? If so, how far apart are the screw holes? After a recent decision to move states I will now be forced to have non European plates that won't fill the holder and am thinking about removing it again. Would prefer to do this at delivery if possible before the application of paint protection film.
United Grey R: All the accessories (leather, not Recaro's though), S2P paddles, Kuftech DVD in motion. Carbon grill, mirrors and diffuser awaiting to be fitted.

If anyone has taken their number plate holder and doesn't want it I'll grab it/buy it.

Yep, plenty of people have removed their number plate holder. On the GTI, a trick was to just use the screw hole plugs to plug up the holes left by the plate holder and not covered by the number plate. But the GTI and R's plate holder is different and with the R you would have 4 holes visible. So I think that this it he more elegant solution!

            AdamD's Lakin Plate Holder Install

Of course, AdamD's car is a GTI too, but Lakin Plates can make the same bracket but for the R (it probably has 4 screws, but they're black anyway).

For reference of what the R's plate holder looks like, check out the Blue R in my post, immediately below AdamD's

            • hey guys

so for those who have the Golf R on order, does anyone know about any political tension with the shipping company? A friend of mine has said that VW HQ says that all shipments will take an extra 6-8 weeks due to this political tension with the shipping company?

              anyone know whats doin?

              • In no way is this a threat, and this might be just a troll, but If this is true that my car is going to take another 2 months on top of the 6 im already waiting, i might have a dummy spit and/or not get the car.

Will VW care? probably not cause the demand for the car is high so they'll sell it. But I might just get a second hand RX-7. I'll decide what I'll get later. This might not even be true! So we'll see before I go on!

(in other words... no... I'd have expected dealers would know before some random person, unless your friend is a dealer)

                  • If shipping WAS to take an additional 6-8 weeks due to a dispute between VAG and the shipping company, it would likely be a delay prior to the shipping company picking cars up from VAG, not once they're on board. It is only going to cost the shipping company more money to have a vessel sitting idle in a port, full of cars, for 6-8 weeks.

Not to mention the legal issues of holding those cars to ransom, when they can achieve the same outcome by not picking the cars up in the first place (and selling the space on the ship to another car manufacturer or someone to keep the ship earning).

With the combined dealer connections in VWWa i'm sure we would find out from an official channel if there were any major delays like that.

Add this one to the list of stories people will tell you, trying to work you up while waiting for delivery. Though yours has had a bit too much effort put in!

If I got paid $5 for every ****head that said a boat sunk coming from Japan when I bought my S15, I could have walked away from the order and got myself a Ferrari
