Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Well its not really the same now is it.. And I guess that could give you an idea. But I dont want an idea, I already have that. I would love to know what an R does, straight out of the box stock.

Do they weigh the same at least?

    • Actually, they are pretty much the same.
Same weight, power, gear ratios,brakes......can't get much closer than that.
Only .4 of a second difference around Wakefield with the same driver.

I dont mind reading the brochures and stuff but I would love to know what a stock, DSG Golf R/GTI does.
WHEELS magazine got 14.6 secs for a 3 door manual R in their current issue. As a comparison, the Evo got 13.96 and the manual STI 14.06 (or thereabouts).

        • From what I've seen, the "dual clutch" version of the Evo isn't significantly faster than the manual (if at all). The Auto version of the STI is lower (same as the non-STI WRX in 0 to 100), and the DSG is significantly faster than the manual - 0.6 second average quicker in 0 to 100, so over the 400m it's easily enough to take the crown between those three...

          • Motor Magazine August 2010 issue has the Golf R DSG time of 13.65 for the 400m and 5.37 0-100.

            • the in gear acceleration btw the 3 were similiar, which i think would be more applicable in the real world.
i haven't driven the manual golf R yet, but apparently it's not the best manual out there.

              • So knock a bit off for the DSG then, 0-100 is half a second (or more) quicker, so a launch controlled run with DSG should be mid 13s you'd hope.

Correct, as per this a few posts above...

Yeah, you aren't wrong there. I'm a fan of manuals, but there is no way in hell I'd pick a sub-par manual over the excellent DSG.

WHEELS magazine does its performance tests with 2 people on board and half a tank of fuel in order to get more real world figures, Motor usually gets better all out numbers.

                    • Just curiously guys....are the MY11 golf R's coming with keyless go or something? I read something about this somewhere and was just curious to know? or do we still get the switchblade key?

And my car was a week 36 build according to the NADCON printout. Does that mean its a 2010 built but a 2011 complied golf R? does that mean I will get keyless go if it comes with it for the MY11 golfs?

Pretty sure i read somewhere that this was only an option on overseas models, not for us.

                            Prodigy has the answer.
Mainly for the US market and Europe however VW are having a few niggles with their Kessy system from what i have read on vortex and there is no way to override the system.

I believe the MY of the car depends on when it was built, not when it was complied as the changes would not have come into effect until the new year.
                            Could be mistaken though.

                            • You're not mistaken TeamV. As has been explained numerous times, build date is when the car was built (seriously ), compliance date was when the car was complianced! But, the Model Year is determined by the "specification update" for the car. The MY11 update commenced production in June this year for Golf models. Where it becomes confusing is if there is no update in specification, you could have an MY11 built in 2013...

                              • Anyone had an update recently? I got told prodution week 40 but I've been comparing "handover to production dates" etc so not sure how it relates.

Jan delivery is looking more likely. Gotta be a bad practical joke, how long does it take to build and deliver a ****ing car? Wish other manufacturers would release something worth buying, I've had enough!
