Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Basically everything that can be put into a 3 door except Recaros (cause I don't like 'em), and 19's (cause I wanted the silver headlights and might go aftermarket on wheels anyway).
Oh, and in rising blue too...
    Nice

      • Yeah - except without the electric seat cause you can't get it in a 3 door (and it has no memory function, which to me takes out much of its usefulness anyway).

Thirded! When I test drove the same car a few months apart (~150kms compared to ~3500kms), it was like night and day! So just an excuse to rack up the km's quickly

At the time i found the perfect spec car i wanted, colour and all, but just couldnt source one with 19s which i wanted as i thought the 18"s looked a little too small, so i got some replica "rs6" style rims instead. I'm happy with the switch. it made quite a big difference in looks i thought

ps: the wait is worth it, so hang in there! I've just hit over 3,500km now and its starting to loosen up really nicely now. Just when i thought at over 1000km it was starting to show its power nicely, its jumped up another notch again! I really am enjoying the car. You'll love it believe me
Dealer just contacted me and apparently it should be right at the end of November delivery. I have never waited, wanted or been so keen for automotive goodness for so long in my life. But alas it will october soon. And then November. How does it sound now that your exhaust must be wearing in nicely as well?

Your rims - I didnt notice that they werent the actual R rims.. I remember thinking that they looked so much better, and you had the silver headlights - I was too stumped to notice the pattern difference!

But they do look like the 19s on the R from factory cause they had a really nice silvery finish, awesome contrast with the paint.

Alas mine was not able to be changed to U-Grey, so Ill stick with R-Blue it looks like. It was my first choice anyways.

Yeah, the Golf R, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Audi RS6 rims are all VERY similar. They're all variations on the same triple spoke 5 point star theme. The 911 version looks the most different because of the black treatment to the spoke sides. But the main difference between the RS6 and R rims is simply the "emphasis" of the internal or external spokes in each triplet.

+1 That just made my day

On another note, I'm not going to follow up Dermot as I'm afraid the date may change, I think I'll remain in ingnorant bliss now and be pleasantly surprised later, though a friend of mine who picked up his R36 last week from Dermot mentioned that my R hits production this week

                • just curiously guys.....

with the Golf R....i ordered a 5 door and i know that the rear door windows are darker than the fronts....i asked the dealer why and he told me the reason but i forgot it (something about how its a rule in germany? i dunno im talking outta my ass here)

anyway, can anyone tell me firstly why its darker at the back than the front

and if that "darkness" is tint or if its the actual glass?

                  Comment

                  • Tint rules vary per country. Hell, they even vary per state in Australia. For example, SA can only have down to 70% VLT tint on front passenger and driver windows. Whereas depending on the state/country/rules, the rear side windows and rear window can have 35% (most of Australia) or even 0% VLT (opaque) depending on the vehicle type and local laws.

Have a look for the tint threads on this forum, but basically VW have never released any specifications about the factory tint apart from it being "65% light absorbing". Which is actually incorrect anyway, because tint also reflects, as does the glass itself, so even if it was a VERY low reflecting tint that'd put it into the illegal territory. So we think what they really mean is "35% VLT" (Visible Light Transmittence). Anyway, you can find much more information in the tint thread...

....so its tint? not just a matter of the actual glass being dark? i.e i can remove the rear tint?

                      Comment

                      • if it's not dealer installed (factory) then it is built into the glass making process so you cant remove the tint, cos it's not a film.
you have to replace the whole glass with a clear one. most japanese cars these days are like that, they call it privacy glass - they're usually on the back only as in most countries it is illegal to tint the front side windows.

Obviously its tinted, but there is more than one way to achieve that. The VW tint is actually in the window glazing, it's not a separately applied film, so it can't be removed. But again... you can find all the info you want in the tint thread

                          • Golf R - Anyone know first hand 1/4 Mile time?

Hey, any real world times for the Golf R (or GTI) at the 1/4 mile, such as Eastern Creek.

I dont mind reading the brochures and stuff but I would love to know what a stock, DSG Golf R/GTI does.

                            • A good question this one mate, was never able to break 14 secs in either of my WRX's while in stock form so hoping the Golf R will be well into the 13's.

                              • You could look up times for the Audi S3... they've been around an awful lot longer than the R, so probably more people have information on them...
