Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I dunno what all the Rising Blue haters are on about, haha. Although, until this weekend I'd not really had too much cause to think about the differences between the old and new blues.

Firstly, I've seen a couple of new blue Rs at dealers and on the streets now, and I think it's a really good colour.

Secondly, I parked next to a blue Mk5 R32 on the weekend and thought to myself (while thinking of the RB haters on VWW): is that it?! Is that this magnificent colour that is supposed to make the new blue look crap and unbearable. IMO the new blue has less red and is more pure.

I think the Rising Blue actually looks better and you're all wrong, so there, haha!

    • I dunno, this blue is pretty good:

compared to one i took at the dealers..
Probably a bad photo but nothing like the Frankfurt motorshow blue.

      Same camera though..

      • See with my 'old' eyes the two blue's look pretty similar in those pic's but in person they seem quite a bit different..

I agree, i have the biscay blue pearl and it looks amazing with a broad range of colour.
The Mk5 R32 had a great deapth (similar to mine)

The Mk6 R seems to be a blue/lavender mix and doesn't have that broad range of colour change in varying light.
In bright light it looks similar to the Hyundai Excel purple colour.

          • Well... the number of different shades that we've seen the Golf R's blue in, seems to suggest the opposite, that it DOES have that broad range of colour. The photos' I posted of the one from Eastern Creek certainly didn't look purplish.

            • R32 is definetly a darker shade of blue. Although I like the blue the R comes in, I would have liked it much better if it was darker. I'm talking like the BMW LeMans blue the 335 comes in...that shade...personal opinion.

              • The BMW LeMans blue is one of my favourite blues too!

                • I was partial to the Blue Graphite colour in the mk5's.
It was insane the amount of depth that colour had in it, the car was litterally 5 different shades in the same light depending on where you looked at it from.

I do like the LeMans blue from BMW though.
Some manufacutreres just have that 1 colour that is better than all others.

                  • oh ya hands down. If the GTI (or the R) was offered in a similar colour, I would have easily waited 6+ months for it!

                    • I think that the MK5 R32 DBP was darker and had a deeper shine, especially after a wax it was amazing.. lots of sparkle and deep shine.

Sure does, and I dislike 90% of them LOL. We'll always find something to argue about hey

                        • Wondering if anyone has heard or seen any signs of an official Golf R brochure as yet. I'm keen to get hold of one.

There's one of the German and UK Volkswagen sites though.

Their reasoning is that in a 2WD car, usually one of the axles lets go first, and you've still got traction at the other end to use (if you're experienced), whereas with AWD, once it lets go, you're gooooone!

You are right sort of. In a 4Wd though the threshold before it let's go though is much higher. And with RWD, what happens is if you lose it (the tail) you have the opportunity to catch it and correct your line by giving some oppy lock etc. FWD had buckleys on either of these 2 formats. But with advances in fwd tech (bought on by it's cost effectiveness to manufacture) they do quite well.

But in the wet, the last place you want to be is a tight corner with FWD. Understeer all the way into the gutter or worse.

Please refer to rally cars for grip (awd). And f1 cars (rwd).

But as I mentioned Fwd does very well in some circumstances and in some conditions.

Good description REXman but doesn't ESP change the landscape again as far as control is concerned in AWD cars.
In the case of a car having AWD + ESP?
ESP will control and attempt to correct any loss of traction.
