If it's a DSG check the shifts are all nice and smooth and no jerky stop/starts (although you may have to get use to it since it's not like a normal auto) but there's been no problems with the R that I've heard of.

Guys - are there any specifics to look for?
Only if it is CW make sure it is an R and you didn't take a fridge for a test drive :p

Other than that your cheque book

      • Thanks for the quick reply guys. Yep - I'm after a used R or demo/near new. Can't stretch the budget for a full new with a few options I'd like...

I know the DSG box is laggy from a red light stop as I'm currently driving an Audi a1 with dsg and my partner has a 12' polo gti.

Car I drove seemed ok. No issues/warning lights popped up so I guess that's a good start!

If I can find the right one, I'd love for it to be in rising blue!

                • My latest observation is a Megane in Black with Black wheels on a striaght road at 5 am in the morning looks hawt... but a RB Golf R will have it for breakfast and because there is still time, lunch as well..

The R might take it on the straights, maybe, if the Megane isn't tuned but the R will plod behind like a wet sponge on the corners.

Agree they look fantastic on the road though, much better looking with more presence than the peasant car R

? A tuned Megane is a match for an R? Or are you saying an R with suspension mods is a match for a Megane. Either way stock cars have their own strengths and weaknesses! Modded then all bets are off!

So is a stage 1 R. Worse still, they suck on the corners

Depends on the driver...the car is capable, in any state of tune.

The hot tuner challenge showed that minor mods make a dramatic improvement to the handling

Stock with a stage 1 tune, wet sponge, irrespective of driver.

Capable does describe it though, nothing great, just capable as a hatch

If the R is just capable, my wife's 2011 Corolla must be almost dangerous!
