Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of replacing the stock paper air filter with an aftermarket one like the BMC in a slightly modified stock intake ?

My considerations are to keep intake noise at stock levels (don't hate, I just think excessive intake noise is bogan)

I assume the dealer won't be impressed at next service ?
No difference in what kind of filter is used.

Check out mightycarmods video on it.

      Link ?

All I could find was regarding pod filters and CAI's, neither of which interest me.

I'm talking about a more open weave, less restrictive air filter to replace the stock filter ?

Edit - mind you, on the R, both of those videos seem wrong as CAI's with modified intakes have made a difference ?

          • Here's an observation. Pulled out of a jindabyne service station at 6:00 this morning heading to Thredbo - just as another R and GTI went buy.
Wasnt long before a very "spirite" drive began up the Alpine way! With no other traffic, it's gotta be one of the great drives. Long straights, flowing courners, twisty hill climbs - the lot.
We were all pushing it a little, but on the first of the bigger hills I passed the GTI - much to his annoyance, and at the national park entrance we (the Rs) pulled over and waited for the GTI.
Then it was on again! The corners get much tighter after that and in the last 3ks we completely lost the GTI. With so many tight corners, and so much more pull out of them we left him well behind. On the few down-hill bends though, he appeared to make up ground...
Arrived at the Thredbo entrance and there were two huge grins, and some sweaty palms.
            God I love this car!
The drive was almost as good as the skiing!

            • Drove the GTI and R at Phillip Island and the R felt much more composed through the long fast corners. R felt planted at all times while the GTI sometimes felt like it was struggling to hold on. It also didn't feel like the big step up from my Stage 1 118TSI which was a shame. Only advantages I could appreciate were the exhaust (and DSG fart) and the seat bolsters. That said it ever really felt like it was trying too hard to accelerate unlike mine (due to different engine size).

Needless to say I'm hoping someone in Melbourne with a DSG R has to sell one cheap one day so I can upgrade

              • Hitting boost mid corner isn't always predictable .... all worked out but the centre curb came very close to the front drivers wheel !

Wife was in the car as well.

                • My observations of the day:

The RVC takes a while to start - I'm usually out of the garage and down the street before it kicks in.

The MDI sometimes gets stuck on "system starting", especially the "media" function, so that it can't be accessed until the car is restarted - maybe there is a way to reboot it?

                    • 2 items for this thread:

Firstly I recieved a letter today from VW today explaining they had deregistered my Warranty protection because they have no record of my numberplate ( which I have changed for Euro plates ) having been serviced in the required time as per the warranty compliance. I have had it serviced at VW but not the one the dealer recommends but one that is closer and with different plates.. anyone else had this issue.. I am off to the dealer tomorrow with said service manual and letter to understand what exactly they have done

Secondly I may be off my rocker but more often than not I get the sense once you petrol level drops into the red the car performance is affected.. I find I fill up again and a return to normal progamming occurs. It is nothing dramatic but I just sense it goes into an econo mode

                      Anyone else feel this..?

                      • 1. Sounds like a simple clerical error
                        2. Never noticed it myself

                        • Regarding paperwork errors

I found out 3 years after buying my Forester that the dealer had sent through the wrong VIN for rego

                          Out by one digit

Effectively no rego or insurance for the 3 years I owned it

Only found out when it came time to sell it and I couldn't

                          Took a week to sort.

                            • Sometimes there's definitely a performance boost when I fill up, however it doesn't always feel sluggish in the red zone (think I'm just about in it now and it was zippier than normal tonight, car being lighter and all I suppose).
