Does anyone know if there will be any model year 2013 built MK6 Golf Rs brought into Australia? Im trying to get a firm answer from a dealer but no-one can tell me.
I know there's a batch of MK6 Golf R's to be built in week 36 (early September this year), for a Nov/Dec delivery. Will these be the last batch we see?
A Jan/Feb 13 build with March/April delivery has been suggested but nothing firm, and calling VW Australia for an answer was a waste of time.
I know MK7 Golfs will be available next year, but the MK7 Golf R is some way off I'd imagine.
STI's better on what level? Higher cost, lower spec, less refined. Really a big stretch to believe that comment.
How are they less refined? i can point out half a dozon faults with finish and fit just at a glance sitting in my MY12.5 Polo gti. and the same with my mates golf R. My 08 liberty GT spec b had no gaps in trim and still looked brand new when i trade it in after 4.5 years. my mates R has 50k on the clock and it squeks and rattles over the slightest bumps. i floged my GT all day everday and not one noise developed.
higher cost? The STI is only fractionaly more if you go for the stock models. the spec R has lighter wheels and supesion mods hence the extra price.
lower spec? The sti has a centre controlled diff. its All wheel drive system is in my opion after driving both well ahead of the R. and it has brembos ($6000 extra by itself) and has 33kw extra. bi-xenons are standard. alcantara/leather seats. and the list goes on if you compare there specs.
Thanks for the link. Reading through it this info seems to be for the North American market, and they are primarily talking about MY13, not 2013 build. However the mention of "no planned end of production for the R" sounds promising. Here's hoping Oz will continue to get the MK6 R into 2013. If I can get a definite ''yes'' from a dealer i'll be putting down a deposit.
I've heard conflicting reports. My dealer tells me that the last run of Mk6's is being built right now, with production to end in September/October. These will primarily (apparently) be Golf R's....
Then I read that they will be available in the US until further notice, but that stock will be limited...
I'd suggest if you want one, order one. The only way you'll be sure is to commit - you'll only get official news after there's no more available.
Hey, when you are right about something it's OK to be off topic
Ha ha! Off topic indeed. But when you sit in the beautiful cockpit of the R you feel like you've arrived. Sit in the cockpit of an sti and you feel like you've arrived - in 1987. Horrible (IMO)
OK, did a few Google searches plus searched this forum, all without much luck.
What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any) of replacing the stock paper air filter with an aftermarket one like the BMC in a slightly modified stock intake ?
My considerations are to keep intake noise at stock levels (don't hate, I just think excessive intake noise is bogan)
I assume the dealer won't be impressed at next service ?

^ probably not much - if anything. I have a replacement K&N panel filter in our Mazda and it made no noticeable difference to noise / power etc, although i may (placebo?) have picked up a bit better response from the engine. The only real advantage is that these filters can be cleaned and re-used, and will save you a few $ in the long run.

Hi Nick, welcome to VW world You still got your 6?
Only advice I can give you is I am very happy with my R after almost 2 years and don't regret the move from the MPS. Though if a MK VII R is not too far away then maybe this would be tempting enough to wait?? Dilemnas, all the best mate.
