Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I don't know what the power band of the R is but even on my old GTR R35, I always found the 6th too tall. It was designed for efficiency I guess.

The 997TTs with the 7th cog meant much closer spaced 5th and 6th. So even if the R35 could pull ahead at first, on a long enough stretch the 997TT would overtake it when the R35 had to switch to 6th.

I've had two Foresters, two Legacies, an Outback and a WRX

A mix of 5 speeds (Forester and 1 Legacy, WRX) 4EATs (Forester and Legacy)

All handled fewer gears just fine

      • I reckon my car (with APR Stg 1) would be fine, if not better off, if it didn't have 1st gear (7spd) - would be a lot less jerky. 0-100 times might be slightly affected but I could live with that. If I'm crawling in D it can happily stay in 2nd at ~7kph, but if I'm in M it automatically jerks down to 1st at ~12kph

        • I have a dilemma.

I have a week old Golf R and today it has been fitted with a Turbo XS dump pipe. Exhaust is still stock. ECU hasn't been flashed yet and no other modifications done.

Now my Golf R doesn't sound nice anymore. I like the stock dump pipe because it's quiet and only start to make louder noise at higher rpm. My R no longer feels like a daily drive anymore. At speeds above 70kmh, I can hear a drone at the rear passenger seats. When the car is at stand still it sounds like there is a hole at the back of the car but there isn't any obviously. I really dislike the sound during gear change. It's no longer a burp. It's now a braap. Is this normal for a dump pipe only upgrade? How about those TBE Milltek system?

The sound at low speed is really bad when I'm driving in D mode. My wife is not in town this week. I'm pretty sure she will ask me to return the DP back to stock. I probably wouldn't mind doing that and just go for Stage 1 ECU upgrade.

If there is a way to make it sound nicer, please let me know. I prefer to have a better performance car with no noise at low rpm.

          Many thanks in advance!

          • Do you have the mufflers exhaust valve connected or has it been disconnected and plugged ? If its disconnected it sounds crap at idle and part throttle
I put one on my own car on Monday and by yesterday afternoon it was quieter. They all do this.

Hi parso, I'm not good with cars. I don't know the answer. How can I find out? It is an extra component that doesn't come with the TXS install?

              • no its part of the original muffler. In between the two tailpipes theres a valve that opens and closes the drivers side exhaust pipe. The Valve has a vacuum line thats attached to the top of it similar in size to that which you would normally see used in wiper washer hoses. What some of the guys do is remove the rubber hose and block it with a screw or similar just to change the exhaust tone at idle.
Its worth checking to see if its been left off for some reason. I'll see if I have a picture somewhere.

Here you go, these are truly crap pictures taken with the front camera of my iphone but you get the idea. That black solenoid has the black vacuum hose entering at the top which in effect is the side of the black body if you had the valve off the car - if that makes sense. You should be able to feel along the hose to the recessed nipple on the top side of the valve. If the hose is dangling free then theres the problem and its easily fixed

                • Thank you very much for helping me, Parso. The information that you provided is spot on.

I've just checked and rechecked. The hose is connected. Nothing is dangling free at the back.

I think I just don't like the sound of the car now. I guess I'll remove it next week.

                  • Make sure they didn't wedge something into it to block it off...

Yes true and if its fine you shouldn't feel any exhaust coming out at idle.

I'd still give it a week so see how much it quietens down you may be surprised

                      • Can anyone else provide some feedback on the sounds of a newly installed dp only? ie xs, apr etc. Does it really add a significant amount of noise? As I'm yet to purchase one, I would have assumed that the difference in sound would be very minor due to the exhaust staying stock?? Obviously cavinsoo assumed the same and hasn't found this to be the case.....thus far.

Are you in Melbourne, masev? If yes, we can meet up.

With the TurboXS only setup, I don't mind the extra loudness at high rpms. But at very low rpms (less than 2000rpm), the sound is not what I expected. Hard to describe. It sounds like it's leaking but it's not. I think it's the effect when there is not enough air flowing through a big pipe. Right now the car doesn't fart anymore. I have a DSG Golf R. It used to burp. Now it braaaaap braaaap braaaap. Not a bad thing if people like it, but it's not what I expected.

Basically my car can never be quiet anymore. It's always noisy, even at stand still. I really miss the stock down pipe. I will refit the stock down pipe next week if things don't get better. Maybe it's normal to be like this but it's not what I expected.

                          • Unfortunately not cavinsoo - Personally I would love the "braaaap" over the "burp" but would not enjoy any kind of low rev droning!

I know it's hard to tell by the video but does it sound anything like this? (Non-DSG R)

                            • Hi masev. I've seen that YouTube video before. It's similar, maybe.

Problem is that video is captured outside the car. It would be different on the inside.

And yes, in my situation with the TurboXS combo with stock exhaust there is droning while driving at low revs (below 2k) or driving in D mode.

                              • Does anyone know what the "Deadlock! Check Manual" is trying to tell me when I turn the engine off? I am struggling to follow some of the manual in regards to the deadlock (double button press on remote, how it indicates it is not deadlocked vs deadlocked, the towing alarm disable button etc). I wonder if the long press of the remote to get the sunroof/windows to close would trigger it to remove the deadlock too (i.e. lock it, and realise the sunroof was left open, so quickly press and hold to get it to close)?
