Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yes, I understand you concerns re the DSG. Have always gone manuals to date, but based on test drives and reviews I took the gamble and am so happy I did.

    Enjoy!
how much are you getting from a tank now?
im almost 6000km and i'm only getting roughly 420km per tank which is making me scratch my head considering that i read that others are getting 500 mark with no issues .. i would understand if i was hammering the car but i'm not even pushing it to get 420 =\

I've done 4000kms and am getting around 540 kms to a tank and i do a lot of stop start, short trips. 420 kms seems very low.

I know i am amongst the vast minority having chosen a 6 speed manual (yes i chose it) instead of the DSG. It wasn't a money thing, it was a personal preference thing. I have always preferred manuals and the feel and control that you get with them. I have driven many DSG's (I have several friends and family with VAG cars, and i have driven many Audi's with DSG and even an R8 V10 with R-Tronic). Don't get me wrong, they are a great gearbox, but is the reason so many people have chosen them simply based on the fact that they are 0.5 seconds than a manual faster from 0-100kph? Or is it because you live in a big city and the start-stop traffic is annoying with a manual? Can can you or your partner not drive (or dont like driving) a manual? Or is it something else?

Im just surprised how many people are taking up the DSG option. I know times are changing and that many supercar makers are now switching to this type of technology, but in a sporty car, it has always been a manual gearbox that everyone craves............not anymore it seems.
        Proud manual owner.

Live in the suburbs but I'm old fashioned and really prefer the feel of manual.

                • I've done 11,500km and still push it to get 400km from a tank. I do enjoy using the throttle though. It just depends what sort of driving you're doing. Anything in peak hour in Sydney will kill it. Can't really use Prodigy as an example as he's in WA.

                    This.

If I am doing driving in the city I get maybe 380-450 out of a tank. If I am on the open road I tend to see around 680-720 out of the tank.

So many variables with fuel consumption. Unless you can smell fuel it's probably down to how you drive and where you drive.

                          • Just over 3,500km on my R DSG now. I have spent some $$$$ on it:
                            1. Opti-coat
                            2. Focal speakers all round, 8"sub, Alpine 4 channel and mono amps placed discreetly next to the spare wheel
                            3. APR stage 1

The opti-coat verdict will tell with time
                            The sound is now excellent
The stage 1 ECU upgrade is by far the best thing I have done, not because it is now faster, but because it now drives in D like it should have. The "flakyness" is gone and it changes where it should.

Loving the car and my only real bitch is the climate control - runs way too cold!

Think I've only see that sorta figure when driving on the freeway for 2 hours hehe

I've done about 7800km's now and average around 350-400km's but my fills are usually around 50L so the comparisons are hard without knowing at what point others fill up. The MFD ongoing average says 12.8L/100 which is an improvement on the 13-14's it was showing for the first few months hehe.

My problem is I just can't let go of the paddles (and finally had the aftermarket ones fitted yesterday) which doesn't really allow for great consumption figures. The car is too much fun to just putt around in.
