Golf R Observations and Questions

I'm finding new Roc Rs advertised for 55-56k with ACC and 19" as standard (DSG) with stocks in Feb or now. Manuals are from 53k. All driveaway.

I'm also finding preowned Golf Rs for 56-58k with 19" and ACC from about a year or two.

Is there a reason for this price difference? Are these prices consistent with what's in the market or are the prices in carsales unrealistic?

Frankly, I am not a big fan of the two toned seats on the Roc R. They look horrendous. I'd normally not pay for the Vienna leather option on Golfs but on the Scirocco, I'm actually wishing there was one (there isn't)

I guess I should just hunt around and see what's available: new or preloved when I get there but I'm just too excited doing window shopping on the internet.

we wanted ACC also but couldn't get it without a wait .. can't say that I'd get it now that I've driven one without, even on our cruddy Oz roads.

fyi, R's without ACC have a different brand of springs than R's with ACC, so test driving one with ACC turned off won't feel the same as test driving an R with no ACC.

As for the price difference I'm guessing that a Haldex unit has a fair bit to do with it

Hard comparison.. The ROC hasn't really established a fan base here yet.. but to your question on the R you need to know what all the options are as they are quite expensive. If you go to the prices thread in here and understand the costs of options such as Leather, Satnav, stereo, sunroof, rims DSG etc etc and then look at what the R's being offered for you might see they are well priced. The higher optioned units could have been upto 70K drive away so you might be getting good value for a 12 month old unit for 58

58 seems high for a 12-24 month old R. Ours was 60K drive away with leather, sat nav, acc, dynaudio, 19". Some cars specced with Recaros, Sunroof and DSG will come close to 70k with the LCT.

congrats on delivery ... think I can safely say that, for the burpengary/morayfield/caboolture area you'll have a pretty unique ride!

totally agree on the heaviness comment compared to a GTI .. however, I think you'll find that the R will be nice and agile at 150+kph. Around town though, the GTI/Octavia kicks arse imo.

re engine noise - love it, absolutely lurve it

I am loving the R more with every K I drive. It has been pissing down here for the last week or so, and the R has astounded me in these conditions. Coming from a GTI with tune etc, I keep expecting wheelspin.

Thanks, looking at Corey_R post ....."Golf R Specifications and Prices - 2nd Edition", it is debatable if the premium is that great and it is hard to put a price/value on the features that are exclusive to the R.

Most of us will defend and justify our purchase decisions. So, for me, the premium has been worth it but waiting for something you wanted yesterday is a PITA.

heh.. if you read the GTI v R thread you will find the R drivers don't need to do so much justification. Once you have/own one you just know

Few random responses and an observation:

Re oil temp: mine sits at 90/91 around town. when belting it around mt glorious, briefly gets to 95. on track i have seen it hit 101. as for a safe temp before belting it, i don't think there is a 'number', more it's just a matter of being sensible. they reckon that driving up a hill is the best way to warm up an engine, but of course, it's the gearbox and diff that also need to be warm. normally i wait until i see a temperature on the guage before i belt it (i think it reads from 55 upwards).

Re engine noise: How good does it sound sitting in the drivers seat at idle when someone opens the boot (and you turn off reversing sensors!). i am tempted to take the hatch off it permanently!

Obsevation: Saw a white 35th Anniversary GTI on Saturday night (you parked where I had my car near Indooroopilly if you're reading this). My observation is that the tail-lights when seen at night on the R/35th are amazing. Really made the GTI look special. And whenever I see an R in CW with black 19s a part of me is a little bit jealous I must admit...

Belting an engine when the oil's not up to working temp is one of the very worst things you can do for it. At 55 degrees, your oil is not up to operating temperature and isn't lubricating the moving parts to a degree I'd be comfortable with when pushing on, that's for sure. Going up a hill or revving out your engine is of course going to warm the oil faster - but it'll also be wearing the internal surfaces and bearings in the process!

I never give mine any stick until it's at 80 degrees minimum. Don't drive too gently from cold as to extend the duration of the warmup, otherwise you can be doing more harm than good. Just drive normally until it's up to operating temp before you cut loose, IMO.

Picked up my MY12 Golf R DSG this morning. I'm surprised that the car is sooooooo quiet when cruising. There is no tire noise at all. So much better than our MY10 Golf TDI DSG. The people at the dealership told me to drive the car hard once the engine oil is warmed up. Problem is... can't play in public roads. This car is so damn fast.

Nice!! Screw car wash this weekend. Going to break in the engine there!

No probs. Just watch out for police near the intersection where you turn left near Cambarville. The Reefton Spur limit might've dropped to 80kph recently (although it's very twisty so you should at least exercise two gears), but most of the LP > BB run is on 100kph roads and is one of my personal favourites. You can also turn off to the right (south) early through Neerim or Icy Creek and job back on the Princes Fwy to head back home.

It's actually pretty tame in standard form.. need to chip it..then it will be fast
