  • I've been experiencing the same problem with my 118TSI since the last service. Since it's been driven very rarely it has only got 17,000km in just over 1.5years. It's been serviced on time but I have been getting the same problems as everyone else. I'll be taking the car into the dealer tommorow to have all the problems sorted out (mainly engine and transmission)

First problem is the shuddering in 2nd gear. As I read in the previous replies it does happen at low speeds, especially when turning a corner. I found the car wanted to jump into 2nd gear a bit too quickly, but has sometimes left me wondering why the car even needs a first gear. The shuddering reverberates through the whole cabin and is very evident in the rear right of the car. I read previously on some other vw forums there is such issue in those cars and has to do with the fuel rail rubbing up against the chasis <- **that was just a suggestion**. I can't confirm anything until this is fixed.

I have also exerienced transmission clicking between 1st and 2nd gear. The car is very awkward getting off the line and under normal/light acceleration it clicks very loudly into 2nd gear. However if I push the car more >20% TP, it will go into 2nd without any clicking (however mind you it's not great for fuel economy blasting off everywhere you go...) Also, the transmission has been seen to go 1st up to 2nd and back to 1st on the MFD display on a few rare ocassions.

Other than that, I have misifiring issues on start up (common with the 1.4TSI engine) and the diverter valve is making an extremely loud whistle sound when throttle is applied suddenly (e.g. in the ad where the guy goes around the slow moving semi). The car goes in tomorrow and I'll report back what happens from the dealer when I can.

They said that they have seen and fixed quite a few golf 6 with DSG 7. Apparently it is something to do with a faulty shim. Not sure what the shim is, but sounds like it guides the clutch plates.

Sometimes they warp and create uneven contact... And hence the shuddering.

The fix? They had to go through the standard diagnostic procedure of replacing the mechatronics, even though the service centre knew that was not the cause.

After replacing the mechatronics the issue is still there. So now they can concentrate on the real fix.

They will replace the clutches. The clutch for the even gears is now slipping when i put the boot in after 2000rpm in any even gear. So they're pretty worn out.

They will also replace the shim.

Hopefully they fix the issue. I will see when i pick up the car tomorrow.

I thought to post this as a record for anyone else out there who may have this issue, but are being given the run around. After a change in personnel at my dealer, they obviously now have more knowledgeable staff who not only will acknowledge the issue but also know how to fix it.
I had this issue going on since the first service and the only reply I got from Burwin was that they couldn't replicate the problem. Was living with it until the second service, during which the problem had escalated, and managed to leave the car overnight with them to compare the differences between cold start & warm engine levels. This time they managed to pick the issue that was attributed to a software related issue; the software was upgraded. Told by service personnel that this should rectify the issue and on driving a few kilometers harsh shrudder came back. Called Burwin again, and after repeated attempts managed to get hold of the service team. Got my entire 'clutch assembly' replaced under warranty a couple of days ago. The car feels as good as new now!!

              • I wrote to the VW General Manager Australia - Anke Koeckler concerning the shudder in the DSG transmission of my Golf. A customer service consultant quickly replied by phone and was extremely friendly and concerned for the first few minutes. As in my letter, I advised that it was not convenient for me to travel to a service centre which is a long way away and to go through this mundane process of various testing, maybe 2 or 3 times before an evaluation is complete. It is a well know fact that VW is totally aware of this transmission fault (defective shims and clutch material) so they must recall all vehicles or simply approved this warranty repair without all the red tape involved.
The consultant started to change her tune and advised me that there is nothing that can be done to shorten this process and basically bad luck. She couldn't care less if I sold the car due to my intense disappointment with the VW brand.

                • Yep, I thought VW was in the bussiness of making cars that are reliable and to a high quality. What I hadn't noticed was that they are in the bussiness of making money - selling cars is how they do it. When you get a consultant giving such a responce to a letter to Anke Koeckler you realise that they're working to the minimum legal requirements.
If we're to get action on this we must begin three pronged attacked.

This should occur on the third attempt to repair the issue.
Explain the issue as you see it with the car.
Describe the activity VW has carried out through the dealer.
Describe the cost to you, ie time off work, tolls to get to dealer, extra fuel consumption and worry.
Describe the potential saftey issue as you see it.

Keep the language civil, and to the point.

The only way a recall and final fix would occur is the scale of the issue is expandede to those who can put pressure on VW Australia to put out the recall.

People who have broken down in traffic, or found them selves stuck in traffic or other dangerous situations.

I love my golf when it goes well, but something has b done about DSG issues.

...Came across a fix to the issue, thanks to VW USA...

                    • its because majority of the 7 speeds are dry clutch, so they use different clutches

                      • New clutch pack has been ordered for my car. The latest software campaign for DSG7 (May 25) only addresses a problem with some cars when you leave them in P(ark) for too long - the solenoids don't release properly so that you can't get a gear.

Also when I got my car back I found that I'd lost my APR
Not sure whether I should get it reloaded tomorrow or wait for the new clutch to be installed.

                        • Well its now almost a month later and the shudder on my 77 TSi seems to be back but nowhere near as scary as when it went it but still very noticeable. The delay lag in starting off in first or second gear is literally dangerous when you need to set off quickly.

I just checked my service receipt and they carried out Recall 24V9 and Campaign 37G7. Does anyone know what these service codes translate to?

I have the feeling the DSG has learnt itself to be annoyingly laggy again. I can attest it was really nice to drive the at least the first 2 weeks.

                          • 24V9 is turbo actuator rod rattle. Fitting a 2mm thick washer. Is not a recall, will be done if the customer complains or at the next service. Workshop campaign to improve the product while in use.

37G7 is 7 speed DSG when not in use long term. Gears won't function properly after long term non-usage. Software update due to fault in software for controlling the valves in the Mechatronics, ie. no drive when setting off.

                            • Those four digit codes that you use to determine exactly what repairs are done to a car are universal? As in 24v9 would be called that in other countries as well? Also are these codes found in elsawin?
