Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

+1 Yep agree with all that. I looked for an all rounder that was a liveable daily driver. I want to be able to get out of a car after a long drive and not feel like an old crippled man. All depends what floats your boat and what you want to get out of a car. Agree also that if I wanted a straight line demon probably would've looked at buying something else. I'm sure what ever model we have chosen majority of us will be or are very happy.

The WRX is a pretty good all-rounder straight from the factory floor, 2.5L turbo AWD compared to the R's 2L capacity but it still doesn't explain why people buy Golf Rs in the first place
All I was doing was commenting on the recent "Wheels" results and as there has been such a big thing made of the R's 0-100 times on this forum I thought it was appropriate to bring in another perspective. I can understand now the need many of you find to update with APR. And the fastest time to 400m will always be in front.

While we're on the subject of FWD hatches and track times.
Who builds the fastest stock hatchback?
Renault-Sport Megane RS265 with only 15kW more than a std Megane RS250 clocked 8.08min on the Nurburgring Track.
That's faster than a BMW 1 Series M Coupe, Audi RS3 and Audi TT-RS and Porsche Cayman S - apparently.

              It is an amazing feat.
Imagine what it would do if you gave it a bit more with some mods (if it even has the potential to be modded further.)

The chassis would be hard to improve on as reanultsport know their stuff! More powa would be a goer though, the RS250's give 300HP with a simple flash

                • An ECU tune, a set of KW Clubsport Coilovers, H&R sway bars front & rear and semi-slicks should show a noticeable improvement on the track. Having said that, I prefer the Renault-Sport OE suspension tune -v- Golf GTI OE suspension tune. The Megane RS250 seems to be about 15-20% stiffer everywhere over the Golf GTI. The KW V3 coilovers on the other hand seemed to be up to 35% stiffer than the stock Golf GTI and about 15-20% firmer than the Renault-Sport Megane RS250; in other words - the KW coilovers were a bit too firm for sports/comfort driving esp. over longer distances where you want a bit of comfort. Renault-Sport have done a sterling job in finding a balance between comfort & sport chassis tune.

Not only have I driven the Renault-Sport Megane RS250 - I posted my sentiments on this forum.
See post #1209 on page 121 of this thread for a GTI -v- RS250 showdown.

                        • The best hot hatch ever is will come from Renault next year, when they launch the most hardcore version of the Clio: the RS.R

"...an RS Ultrasport should see the power of the 2.0 L 16V reach 230 hp. There is talk of a Vmax increased to 240 or 250 km / h, a 0 to 100 km / h in 6.0 seconds or so, weighing less than 1200 kg with parts in carbon fiber bucket seats and a lighter sound. The Cup chassis should be further improved for greater sportiness and precision to the few customers who can afford a Clio RS-R which should mark the end of life of this generation of urban motor sport air before the arrival of the next Clio RS model IV is expected with a new 1.6 L TCE.

The Clio RS-R end of his reign should be produced about 300 copies and they announced a price rather high, around 29,500 to 30,000 €. A car for driving enthusiasts and those who want to go to a tap at a certain Audi S1 which ultimately will not be alone at the time, at least for a few months! To be continued in late 2011 or spring 2012."

Sorry for the translation, Goolge did its best...

I'll have one of those over any 400 kW AWD hatch with Carbonio CAI and super-duper remap, whatever the brand!

                          • I wish Renault brought the previous gen R26.R over here.

Now that is an amazing car.

                            • Traditionalists

Traditionally buyers of hot hatches have not purchased this type of m/v for their straight line stomp; rather buying for their fun factor and mountain road prowess . This video highlights what a combination of lighter-weight and FWD can do around a tight twisty hill-climb:
