Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Lol... my main objection is the fact that he's written thousands of lines of analytical text, to the point where I even question where an actual person can even determine some of the things he apparently feels (like differences in the fuel delivery between a 2 lobe and 8 lobe cam, or whatever the diff is between the MKV and MK6), and then he can turn around and say "Oh, saw a Polo GTI at the motorshow and now it's like 40% on my rating and the Golf GTI is only 50%".

Like seriously. That's what it boils down to.
    Looks. Nothing analytical at all

As for being objective about it, well, my objective criticism of the posts relates to things like "There may be an issue ..." when it is based on heresay from somewhere else, not even on his own experience. I've driven my R hard and absolutely disagree with the assertion that it pulls to one side, etc. Haven't seen a single person on here that's driven the R for more than an hour agree with him either? If I had the time (or effort factor), I'm sure I could find many more examples.

And constantly taking the thread off topic, with the Polo thing. I wouldn't normally comment, but someone who continually does that provides for a frustrating experience when reading a thread that everyone else seems to be able to stay relevant in.

Also, if you look at his latest post, it's got nothing to do with the R, so why isn't it in the GTI-love thread?

Honestly, I wish he'd just get on and enjoy driving his GTI like I enjoy driving my R
Like Corey_R has mentioned and i agree....the WJ posts are a "get up"....they are a shyte stir!!!

        Geez, someone's got a complex.

If you don't like reading it, you can just click the "ignore user" button and it will block all his posts from your profile.

I find it really informative, how often do you get a auto journalist who doesn't even know about launch control or comlains about something while doing a abre bones review.

Here you are getting a extremely in depth comparison of 3 cars which are all at the front of the VW hot hatch market.

No matter what you may think of WJ's posts - and even if you choose not to read them - you've got to admit that this thread has got plenty of potential for interesting insights, opinions, and comments. Interpret the word interesting any way you see fit.

But it'd be much better if it didn't degenerate into a flame war from time to time. Forums are 90% chaff anyway, and flames don't improve that ratio. Just my 2c.

          • You can do better burnouts in a GTI. Turning of traction control is fun. I just wish you could turn off stability control as well.

            • Agree with AdamD that every single person is entitled to their own opinion hence these forums and this thread title. Not everyone here is a VW connoisseur, esp me being a newbie so I find these 'opinions' (be it positive or negative) of great interest and benefit, helping me understand the Golf's characteristics and history. I feel that some of these posts are a bit "look/listen to me 'coz I know more than him" rather than being constructive and sharing information/knowledge on a non-bias and non-personal level.

              • I like WJ neighbour's broad interest in cars from Golf R/GTI to Lexus to an HSV R8, talk about comparing apples and oranges. as aside regarding the R8, the amount of tuning available is very wide ranging, but I think if you turn up to your Holden Dealer with a heavily modded R8 and a blown engine, that they will pay attention to the mods before honouring the warranty ?

oh and as for the B-pillar ticking and squeaky passenger front seat on B-grade South coast roads, not in my GTI... a few other squeaks maybe.

So I tried to explain myself in an objective manner and that's what you come up with? Constructive, non?

WJ's posts should perhaps be in a blog-type thread where everyone who wants to talk about cars that aren't GTIs or Rs can go and share the love. That includes various discussions about why other cars are "better" than the GTI or R for whatever reasons they may have.

This thread is about Golf R -v- Golf GTI.

                  • There is nothing wrong with WJ posts,

who finds them too long or hard to process (doesn't understand it) can skip it and later, if he/she wants can go back to it and re-read it.

Please, remember there are many users who like different things and it is hard to please everybody.

There always will be critics for just about anything.

                    Besides, it is his thread.

The article states "The first R32 cost $63,000. It was followed by the R36 at $55,000."

Now I know is it very unlike the News Limited press to get a story wrong , but did I miss a particular Golf variant somewhere along the line?

EDIT - just read the posts at the bottom of the article. LOL. No point discussing this one further, it has no credibility (runs off to try and hit the dashboard buttons whilst holding the gear knob )

                          • Just browsing the thread and will stay on topic and add my two cents worth.
I've not owned a VW since '89 after wrecking my combi in my teens (how I miss that car - bed in back. Those were the days!)
I was looking to get a new GTI after reading many reviews and not deaf to the motoring world acclaim!

So I tested a few and was given one for two days by a Sydney dealer! They are a great car! Getting close to ordering I noticed an R at my local dealer and reluctantly (not wanting to spend up) requested a drive
When I pulled back into the dealership my wife was watching me and she sighed "you're getting that one aren't you?"
You see, the smile on my face was exponentially larger than after driving the GTI.
And I think that's the point (well at least for me).

So, one DSG 5 door R heading my way in Jan...and I'm still smiling.
Lets face it, if offered a GTI or R for free, who could seriously take the GTI over an R?
                            Well, not me!
