Just like a BMW 135i driver would see a Golf R and think "gee I wish I had that instead",Originally posted by Whistler View PostI think that was a big part of my descision. Had I bought a GTI I know I'd want that R that just passed me. I don't think any R driver sees a GTI and thinks "gee, wish I had that instead"
Also, my grin was partly due to blowing away an SS commodore from standstill (though the road was wet) and I wasn't close to mastering a launch!
Haha!
.
its all relative and most people would prefert something more expensive.
must be a good feeling blowing away the fastest family sedans LOL.

Delusion then. No disappointment and what happens when the same money is spent on the turbo Fords?Originally posted by Fab_R View PostWith stage 1 buddy.
Ahh no dream im afraid...sorry to disappoint you.
Stock the R is slower. The only smoking you'll see is what comes off the Ford's rear wheels as they look for traction.Nov '15 Polo 81TSI manual white

I think maybe you're getting confused with some of the Golf R manual times or something like that?Originally posted by Mountainman View PostDelusion then. No disappointment and what happens when the same money is spent on the turbo Fords?

A Golf R DSG with only a Stage 1 ECU does 0 to 100 in ~4.68
This has now been verified by multiple sources.
In the Motor Hot Tuner Challenge a Ford XR6T with with $18,379 of modifications (ECU, Intercooler, Exhaust, Suspension, Brakes, Wheels, Tyres, Short shifter, and Injectors) only managed 4.95.
What about a $88k Harrop Engineering (Supercharged) Commodore SS-V? 4.75
What about a $88k BTA Motorsports Tuned FPV F6 (in the $20k of mods)? 4.61
Or the winner in the Aussie segment, a $90k Walkinshaw Performance SS-V Sportswagen (inc $30k of mods). 4.50 seconds.
So yeah... what happens if you DID only spend $1,500 (the cost of the APR Stage I R ECU) on those cars instead of the $20k to 30k they did to get those times? Well, clearly, they'd be seeing the back of your R as it left them behind

+1. That is a great article, and sums up the two cars quite well. Yep pretty damning figures in favour of the R there. Sorry but the only people dreaming are those that think they can pull sub 4.68 sec 0-100 times out of a Falcodore without spending VASTLY more cash on mods than what is needed on the R.Originally posted by Corey_R View PostI think maybe you're getting confused with some of the Golf R manual times or something like that?

We should rename this thread Golf R vs Anything on 4 Wheels and we'd still probably win.

I'm a bit concerned that their GTI was rolling on 245/60R17s??
that's similar to the Touareg...

I am more than happy to see the R out perform some sheet metal that is revered for its performance figures but I struggle with the idea that a $1500 spend can result in a better outcome than an $18K spend. Perhaps it is metric by which the comparison is being made.. 0-100 figures suggest a power to weight advantage held by the R.. what are the figures over the quarter mile..?
As that would tell you which car would see the other in the rear view mirrorCurrent Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist

Yeah, that's a mistake. They have the correct tyres listed in the specifications at the bottom of the article though.Originally posted by Mr_Bob View PostNice general review,

I also noticed they said this:
This also seems to be a mistake. The front of the R sits around 15mm higher than the GTI. The R has 30mm more ground clearance than the GTI.
Not sure if any Golf R DSG with Stage 1 owners have had a chance to go to a dragway yet. 0 to 100km/h you can measure with a Performance GPS product on country roads or private roads legally.Originally posted by SilvrFoxX View Postwhat are the figures over the quarter mile..?
Quarter Mile is different. The car would be up 180km/h mark meaning it cannot be done on public roads, and more than likely no one has a private road straight and long enough to also have room to slow down.
But it truly is amazing the difference a Stage 1 ECU does make SilvrFoxX. I urge you to experience it yourself as soon as possible after receiving your car and breaking it in

I never said anything about a DSG. If they're so much faster why didn't Guy buy one?Originally posted by Corey_R View PostAPR didn't have a DSG Golf R (or GTI) in the test.
IIRC they had a manual with 30k spent on it which did 0-100 in 5.6 seconds or something (I haven't got the mag in front of me right now).

That being the case it seems to have made the previous arguements about the abilities of the R over a Typhoon somewhat moot..Originally posted by Corey_R View PostQuarter Mile is different. I believe everyone when they talk to the experience of of a stage 1.. I think I will just enjoy it stock for a while to ensure it is all bed in properly and see how it goes down the track.. I fear that the smoothness of the DSG and its already amazing performance will get me into trouble.. a chip upgrade would potentailly make that more problematicCurrent Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist
