Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

tell anyone on the outside that knows anything about MODERN vw's, that they are "more reliable" than MODERN renaults, and you'll get laughed at.

the megane promises to be a good drive. every motoring article seems to agree. so do nurburgring lap times, actually, given that it's faster than the BMW 1 series M, lambo diablo sv, lexus isf, ferrari 355gtb etc etc.... no, there are no VW's anywhere on the list......

so what do you feel that you've been promised, that the megane cannot offer? you say that the megane has an ugly, rubbish interior - how? to me, it seemed pretty similar to the gti's/R interior, albeit without all the unnecessary crap that weighs cars down that matter NOUGHT when you're booting it in the hills, such as heated massage seats, leather, sunroof, intergalactic communications array so that you can confer with the klingons whilst driving your car, reverse cameras and dvd player.....

ive been car shopping very recently with a family member - it's GREAT to be enthusiastic about your purchase, and to fly the VW flag proudly... but the FACT is that no, the megane and gti/R interiors really, really dont contrast THAT much.

like i said, i love VW's because of what they offer in a complete package. i've been a VW fan for a while, and i will continue to be.

but let's be objective here.... you cant go along to a megane driver and belittle him for his decision. you might have a better overall package, but it doesnt matter if you're running whatever tune in your car - if the guy in the megane doesnt like your tone, he'll simply put his foot down, hook it in, and lose you at the next corner, showing you just WHY the megane is the fastest FWD that has ever been around the nurburgring. FACT.

BMW 1M Coupe appears to be over-rated as a driver's car ... Go to 10.00 min mark in the following MotorTrend.com.au Ignition yutube.com video and Randy tells it like it is:

I think TRD & STI might have been on the boat a fair while now. Just because the Australian arms of the company chose to ignore their money spinning potential hardly makes them new players.

          • [QUOTE=team_v;796464]I was under hte impression that turning off ESP completely will also turn off ABS or so I have read?????

Nope.Full ESP off disables traction control and stability control only.
            ABS remains unaffected.

            • Pull the harness off one of the ABS sensors - car will also disable TC/ESP

Not that I have tried it

Agreed WJ, seems like common sense to bundle (common sense isnt always common in my experience however , much as they do for the GTI in the US eg. "Autobahn" package (leather and sat nav as I recall) etc. As it is when I replace my MK6 with a MK7 I'll try to time my lead time for new delivery to match the end of the lease (probably easier said than done)!

Correct however once the brakes are applied the ESP / TC automatically switches back on.

                    • Mmmmm, why do the warning lights stay on on my R, even after using the brakes ?

They only go out if I turn the ignition off.

                        Yes, I've noticed ....

Hopefully the Megane topic gets left out of this thread now along with the Subaru. At least the Subaru appears to bring with it some semblance of longevity

As for a GTI or an R, clearly a GTI owner will justify their purchase over an R but deep down they know it was a compromise. Nothing wrong with that as buying any VW is a compromise, just that the GTI adds another layer to that decision (been there, done that)
