Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Comparing GTI and R side by side is just stupid. Of course the R is better. It is like comparing a 52" tv and a 42" tv at jbhifi. Side by side you can clearly tell the 52" is better.
BUT once you take it home, the GTI is still a very good car.
In saying that, the R is a very good car compared to the GTI especially the price difference is only 10K+ and the AWD system, bixenon parking sensors (as standard) cover those costs.
So really, buy the gti if you are going to keep the options to the minimum, as soon as you add bixenon, leather, etc. You may as well buy the R.
Anyways, i think the mk6 gti got a bad deal. Because vw no longer want to make the bigger engined R(32), they didn't really upgrade the mk6 enough, because it would be too similar to the R. Considering the Pirelli got better parts than the mk6 says it all.
I think in the future it will continue to be the case. The Golf have 2 very similar cars running on a 2 litre engine, therefore the gti will always get the bad deal. The mk7 gti will probably get the engine and turbo of the mk6 R with FWD, and the mk7 R will just get new stuff.

The 52" is only better than the 42" if it's a better model! In fact, even if it's the same model, people could argue that the 42" would be better (quality) because of the finer dot-pitch of the screen....

Also, some people may not have the extra 10k to throw around to upgrade to the R and with all the electronic wizardry in the GTI is will be stable/good enough for normal road use.

Anyways, at the end of the day, it all depends on the budget one have. But if the issue of 5-10k is not a big one, i'm sure alot of people would go for the R.
IMO i didn't think the gti was that good of a car to start off with, they could of improved alot but they didn't because the R is running a 2l engine as well.

IF vw decided to continue with the r32, maybe gti mk6 would of got the better k04 turbo instead of the k03? .Current Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist

I mean, the best TV's every made are from 3 years ago, the last generation of Pioneer Kuro. NO manfacturer has made a TV as good since.
