Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

There's also the problem of the lack of discounts available on the R compared to the GTI you have to factor in though.

+1 I remember counting the days after my GTI arrived and had to painfully wait for the call!

There have been good (comparable to GTI) discounts since day 1 on the R for people who wanted them and know how to negotiate. Recently some people have been reporting that it's getting harder to get discounts due to the wait on the R's - but I'm not sure if this is just similar to the people saying that there "is no discounts on the R" when it first came out, or whether something has actually changed.

      • Comparing GTI and R side by side is just stupid. Of course the R is better. It is like comparing a 52" tv and a 42" tv at jbhifi. Side by side you can clearly tell the 52" is better.

BUT once you take it home, the GTI is still a very good car.

In saying that, the R is a very good car compared to the GTI especially the price difference is only 10K+ and the AWD system, bixenon parking sensors (as standard) cover those costs.

So really, buy the gti if you are going to keep the options to the minimum, as soon as you add bixenon, leather, etc. You may as well buy the R.

Anyways, i think the mk6 gti got a bad deal. Because vw no longer want to make the bigger engined R(32), they didn't really upgrade the mk6 enough, because it would be too similar to the R. Considering the Pirelli got better parts than the mk6 says it all.

I think in the future it will continue to be the case. The Golf have 2 very similar cars running on a 2 litre engine, therefore the gti will always get the bad deal. The mk7 gti will probably get the engine and turbo of the mk6 R with FWD, and the mk7 R will just get new stuff.

I doubt that .. the GTI just got a new engine and the R is the MKV engine..

I guess I get the point you're making, but that's a pretty bad example. Whilst 52" is clearly bigger than 42", bigger doesn't mean better
The 52" is only better than the 42" if it's a better model! In fact, even if it's the same model, people could argue that the 42" would be better (quality) because of the finer dot-pitch of the screen....

                Agreed.

Also, some people may not have the extra 10k to throw around to upgrade to the R and with all the electronic wizardry in the GTI is will be stable/good enough for normal road use.

The point is, with GTI and R both running a 2l turbo engine, vw have to differentiate between the 2 cars. Hence the gti might got a "new" engine, it is not a better engine than what is in the R (new or old). Eg. gti runs k03 turbo and R runs k04 turbo. IF vw decided to continue with the r32, maybe gti mk6 would of got the better k04 turbo instead of the k03?

I was trying to keep it short. What i meant was having 2 tvs, 1 better than the other side by side. You can tell the difference on the rack but when you take it home there is nothing to compare it with, and the not as good one in reality is still pretty good.

Anyways, at the end of the day, it all depends on the budget one have. But if the issue of 5-10k is not a big one, i'm sure alot of people would go for the R.

IMO i didn't think the gti was that good of a car to start off with, they could of improved alot but they didn't because the R is running a 2l engine as well.

I believe they think they have.. the differenciation is not just the engine.. how does this perspective hold water .. Subaru have been running the WRX and The STI for years.. and the engines are the same size.. the reality is running gear is stronger in all aspects in reality the VW offering is far more differenciated .. I dont know that much about the EVO offering but it is also along the same lines

                      • New doesn't mean "better" either.
