I wonder if getting a 3-door would be good for resale if they become a rarity - apparently they are being phased out to be replaced with the Scirocco..Originally posted by coreying View Post3 door R's were not going to be sold in Australia - until we complained and VGA changed their minds.... HOWEVER....
There was an initial "launch batch" of 3 doors coming into the country, and then any further 3 door models need to be factory ordered. I'm not sure if VGA are saying dealers cannot have floor models in 3 door, but there is no requirement etc for them to stock them.... and being how "anti-3-door" Australia in general is, it's not likely they would by choice anyway.
So tell your friend to pick up the phone and start ringing in the morning... don't wait for anyone here to reply, because once they're gone, factory is likely the one way

Dont take my word for it only, just what a mate told me who is friends with a dealer up here. He seemed to think anyone who does want a 3 door shouldn't muck around about it.Originally posted by Tim View Postohh?! says who?! Now you have my attention
Would make sense if the Scirocco eventually did make it out but mustn't be for a while if you are allowed to privately import them..

Ok, lets just get this straight. They're being phased out because Australian's in general are illogical and all think they NEED 5 doors, and therefore 3 door sales are abysmal! Just ask any dealer how many 3 door GTI's they sell in comparison to the 5 door. Just talk to Ford, Honda, Mazda, etc how their 3 door hatch sales are going. Mazda has already removed the 3 door Mazda 2 from this country.Originally posted by G-rig View PostI wonder if getting a 3-door would be good for resale if they become a rarity - apparently they are being phased out to be replaced with the Scirocco..
When Volkswagen announced the Golf R, it was to be 5 door only. They were also going to remove the GTI 3 door..... until members here and other forums complained. They then changed their minds and decided to offer the 3 door with an initial "launch allocation" and then factory orders only.
At the time they announced this they said:
So no Scirocco.there are no further 3 door market introduction vehicles in the pipeline.
Then in this article just two days ago:
And as you even conceeded yourself, why would VGA let other companies import the Scirocco if they had any intention of doing it themselves. And for those of you waiting on a sign from above regarding Scirocco Down Under, perhaps it's time to stop reading, Gehling reiterating that the sporty coupe is still a no-go for the local market.
So all I can say is this. If customers expect Volkswagen Group Australia, or any other car company for that matter, to take 3 door cars in their range seriously, then start buying them!. If 75% of R customers were 3 door and 50% of GTI customers were 3 door, then the Scirocco would be here quick smart!
The fact that it's only 24% of R32 customers and I'm told <10% of GTI customers that order the 3 door means there is very little reason VGA would bother with the Scirocco.

I think the low 3dr sales really shows how the Australian market still has a loooooooong way to go in embracing/appreciating premium hatchbacks.
The amount of comments you read on non-VAG forums/websites saying stuff like "$60K+ for a Golf are you kidding me" still amazes me. In return I would say, "60K+ for a Commondore, are you extracting the urine!"
Similarly, I almost fell off my chair the other day when I met an Evo X owner who paid nigh on $10K more for their car than my S3. I'm not trying to say one is better than the other--they serve different needs, really--but if 60 grand is too much for a Golf then on what planet is 80 grand for a Lancer deemed okay, haha?!

He could have bought a slightly used 135i and still have $10K change.Originally posted by Lima View PostSimilarly, I almost fell off my chair the other day when I met an Evo X owner who paid nigh on $10K more for their car than my S3. Hey u got what i m concrening mate. lol
IMO 60k for the R worth the money. compare to the commodore, golf saving us to fill up. after 5 years, the running cost will show the huge difference. Alos, No matter the GTI or R, they will not lose to a commo under the legal speed.
My worry is after spending 60k+ and after 3-5yrs of enjoyment. Will I get a good market support to sell?MK1 Golf convertible

Very true. That is my response to anyone who questions me buying a 60k "golf". The evo might be slighly faster but it isn't THAT much more capable and at the end of it all, its based on a lancer which is a cheap plastic encrusted turd. A golf - any golf is already a great base car. Yes there is a fair difference between the price of a base lancer and base golf but once you get to Evo/R or Ralliart/GTI, they're on par in pricing but vastly different in specification etc.Originally posted by Lima View PostI think the low 3dr sales really shows how the Australian market still has a loooooooong way to go in embracing/appreciating premium hatchbacks.

I'm a self confessed hoon but living with the plastic crap lancer every day would annoy the **** out of me. How they can justify the price of the Evo/STI/370z etc is beyond me.

I agree that Australian consumers still appear to struggle with the notion of spending big dollars on a premium hatch, but I don't personally draw any parallels between that and the 3dr/5dr debate. I think that Joe Average baulks more at the idea of spending serious coin on a vehicle that is - to the untrained eye - just a dressed-up entry-level model, than a car that has a 3-door hatchback body.Originally posted by Lima View PostI think the low 3dr sales really shows how the Australian market still has a loooooooong way to go in embracing/appreciating premium hatchbacks.2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG

ive mentioned it before but id think that 3 door cars are more geared towards younger (perhaps even just young at heart) people.
Its only in Australia that VW is marketed as a prestigious brand for old farts. The tides are slowly turning though hopefully.
One thing to consider is that potential scirocco customers are not necessarily people that would consider a golf. I would more think they would be interested in other sporty coupes from the hairdresser spec Toyota Celica through to a Nissan Z.

Blah, I'll just give mine to the missus and get myself something better. To hell with buying something just cos its easier to move in a couple years.Originally posted by G-rig View PostIMO It's easier to move a 5dr hatch when you're finished with it.
3 door may only appeal to 30% of buyers, but ultimately get which one you prefer.
That makes sense, they're all ugly LOLOriginally posted by Tim View PostI would more think they would be interested in other sporty coupes from the hairdresser spec Toyota Celica through to a Nissan Z.
