I don't get it. e.g. People queuing overnight to be the first to buy an iPad, paying full retail for a new R. It is only a inanimate object. It doesn't define you as a person.

** this question isn't addressed to Sharkie directly btw, it is to everyone who has bought a popular car on initial launch.
I guess some people value time in the car over saving a few bucks. I know if I'd been hanging out for an R for 12 months or more I'd just want the damn thing because I had been waiting so long. Sure, getting one early would be nice, but not the main contributing factor.

For example, we got one of the first Mk5 3dr GTIs in the country, which was nice, but really the timing just suited as we were at a stage we really wanted to trade in our previous car. We compromised on spec a little, but got pretty close and I know had we ordered and got exactly what we wanted by ordering that the extra 4-6 months in the previous car would have sucked because we'd lost confidence in it after its engine crapped itself, haha.

So how do you put a price on convenience? It's not necessarily all about being one the first as you seem to assume.

In regards to an iPad, which is a sub $1K item, who cares if someone wants to queue to get one. It's doesn't hurt anyone, so good luck to them. Personally I wouldn't do it, but I also wouldn't judge someone who did based on a simple purchasing decision.

    Live and let live.

The blue does look a bit better in person, it's a safe bet getting the signature colour too, considering apparently the Mk6 models all look similar. However the MK6 does look so good in Candy White.

Agree with you that the style of wheel does look smaller and i'd probably get 19" as well. Still not digging the black.

Oh that's good. Are you able to share with us the cost of the Registration / Insurance / Plates for NT? They're not available online anywhere for NT (and do you know whether it changes for each individual, or just for each model of car?)

        • Thanks coreying for the price calculator. This is what my purchase came to :$60,000.00, RRP $62,816.50 Saving of $2,816.50, 4.48%. Im quite happy with that on a car that is in stock now. How did you manage to go with your order coreying.

Doesn't take many options before the price is ridiculous. Would be good to wait till you can get 12% off.
I guess it's all relative. So many people here think that the Audi S3 is a great alternative... yet even the most heavily optioned 5 dr DSG Golf R only comes out to $77,851.50 on the road in NSW, which is only $682.50 more than the $77,169 drive away price of the base-spec Audi S3 Sportback. Even adding just Metallic paint or the flat-bottom steering wheel will put the S3 over the R in price.

So I don't believe that the Golf R price is ridiculous in the slightest.

So with the above all stated, it's obvious the the Golf R is very aggressively priced. I'm not sure we'll see many (if any) examples of 12% discounts on the Golf R, like we have on the Golf GTI.

            • NT details, for my purchase anyway, not sure if/how they change for each puchaser/vehicle.

              Dealer Delivery $2495
              Stamp Duty $1755
              Rego $79
              CTP $458.35
              Plates $0

I agree and think that it is very aggressively priced; I would go on a limb and say that the Aus market is quite fortunate when considering the UK & NZ prices. Certainly the best value in its price range IMO.

              • lovely work coreying.

Spec for spec, an R would have cost me 15K more (assuming NO discount on the R)

Looking forward to test driving one soon.

Not all of us would be so childish to hate the R just because we couldn't afford the car .

If I could of got a similar spec R close to the price of my GTi I would of bought the R .

                  • HATE is such a strong work.

I am a GTI owner, and I quite like the R.

I also quite like the GT-R (of which I have a hard bound brochure that I am currently perusing)

Horses for courses. Each one has its application, and it's up to the individual to chose which one is right. For ME, as the daily hack-a-bout, the GTi Is overkill as it is. The R perhaps would be more overkill...

As a side note, is teh R 98RON only, or is it 95+ ?

                      The specs document says 95
I'm sure if we look in the fuel cap it'll say 98, with 95 being the minimum.

There's no way I'd spend 78k for a Golf or VW, but then again it's well price compared to the audi but may be annoying once the rattles and complaints start and the Audi is still that little cut above. Personally i'd keep the options fairly lean and enjoy it.

I agree there probably wont be any discounts like that around for a fair while but should be able to get 2k off the price you'd think.

But I mean, they're the same car.... so really that's just brand snobbery. If you were actually looking at something different and better than fine - but changing to the same car with a different badge is well, brand snobbery (in my opinion anyway)

I'd rather buy the VW, save my $20k, and go on a very cool holiday

Agree with you there, Triode should add Pirelli, R32 & MK5 owners to his list if that's the way he thinks .

The main reason people would buy the R is for bragging rights, doubt you actually need the extra power/handling for the streets. It's a pretty good package, although road presence and looks are a bit down on the R32 so I decided the GTI would be plenty this time (and still faster than my R32 was).

My point was they are put together a bit better where it may feel like a more expensive car. I also prefer the R but some of the S3 discounts would make you consider one. Still wouldn't now with the new models around the corner.

                            • So i went today to make sure the blue was a nice blue, because a few people said they were dissappointed by it or something>? I am not sure what they were smoking, but the blue looks really nice in real life. I was gobsamcked by it. And the LED tails look so good against it!!

Im sold on the blue I really dont know how you could not think it was a nice blue. The black hides all the details.

Have to get the 19's on it cause the 18s look small, which is wierd cause the Detroits look perfect on a GTI.

Also the GOLF R is louder than a GTI. My GF said that was the first thing she noticed on the test drive. And as the car gets more KM's (200 only on that one) It will get louder. So I agree.

Although some things I dont like about my new car, I prefer the front end of the GTI to be honest. The red stripes and the honey comb grill look awesome. The Golf R, has the plainer looking grill.

I like the rear of the R better.

The other thing I dont like is that you cant get wheel spin or screeeetch off with the R. Which is one thing which got me excited about owning a non 4WD again, with the GTI.

But it (R) did feel very planted and sounded slightly raw which was great.

As far as the value goes, or whether its practical, I guess whatever helps you sleep at night.

I can see it now: Ferrari Ad in the classifieds.

Selling due to high maintainence costs, crampt cabin and impractical ride height.

Performance cant be used on the road, and I dont like the over powering sound.

Selling or will consider a swap on a toyota camry, though for the tremendous reliability and fuel economy, I will surely pay you for the swap.

                              Moving overseas. Act quick!!

Yeah, I think that the R's blue looks great too. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.
Oh, btw, having owned two cars with the Golf honeycomb grill, I'm glad that the R doesn't have it! You know how much of a PITA it is the clean and then dry that honeycomb grill. Soaking up the water that stands on the honeycomb structure is timing consuming and annoying, hehe.
