Just bought one. Drove it, liked it. The only thing it didn't have that the GTI had was the wheels don't chirp which adds to the excitement I thought. But other than that, the turbo sounds more pronounced, and the exhaust sounds more intense as well. Amazing car.

So if i wait for corp discount (~6%) and then order, it could be close to a year before i get a car!
Haven't driven it yet but it does look good in rising blue and 19" rims, but i'm mentally struggling with spending $65k-$70k on a Golf, and still have to wait another 6+ months for it.
Might have to keep shopping and see what else grabs my fancy.

Test drove an R about 15 mins ago.... disappointed to be honest.
Not really impressed to be honest.
There is a lot of turbo lag in the lower end and only kicks up a stink at about 3500rpm. I expected a real rush of acceleration however it just didn't have it. Maybe because Australia gets the down tuned 188kW version?? Even still, thought it would have more balls with the revised 4-motion system, DSG box and big power.
My mechanic (vagman on here) has a Superchipped Golf 6 GTI and myself having an APR chipped Polo GTI (very similar in pace to each other) have both agreed that our cars pull harder and are quicker.... only slightly. I'm guessing I'll cop the 'bias' rants from people and the 'world eating Polo' comments, but we got 3 of the dealership staff to take my mates GTI for a run and they also agreed the GTI was quicker and more impressive than the R.
Another notice was that the only differences in interior were blue needles (as opposed to red in the GTI), some white stitching accents in the seats, R badges in place of GTI badges, and some aluminium look door trim which I honestly prefer the gloss black in the GTI. Apart from those minor changes, the interior was exactly the same.
Anyone who is considering an R which I will be the first to agree is a superior car, it really does need a chip to have that WOW factor which it was clearly lacking. For the sake of $10k cheaper, a chipped GTI is definitely a better option.
That's just my opinion and would love to hear everyone else's once they test drive one.
Cheers,

i agree not paying anything close to 70k for just the R.
for that price... 135i and S3 will be more sensible.
if the R over 65k ...i dont bother to get one. since there are more choices for that price range...
Around 60-65 would be reasonable to get the good R.MK1 Golf convertible

We've been over all these things in the 'speculation thread' before when everyone still thought the Golf R would be R32 prices... well now it's not. Now it's $7,000+ cheaper (~$4000 if you factor that leather isn't in it now). It's next cloest rival, the S3, is around $17k more expensive (after the R is optioned with leather and S3 is optioned with the things it's missing which are standard in the R).

The initial allocation (apperently all built Sep09) will be followed by a delivery of some more cars in Oct/Nov (already ordered). So for anybody who want a car with specific extras, hope for a January delivery at the earliest ...... 6 month wait
I was told my custom build will be here in aug/sep as they placed the order as soon as they could. If I had waited until now after testing the car, then it would be the lot after that which matches your Jan estimation. If mine is delayed beyond September, I'll cry....
I'd cancel in protest but after the drive, there isn't anything better under 80k from any showroom in Aus right now.

FYI everyone. The Golf R starts at $53,905 on the road in NSW. Even the 5 door DSG Golf R is only $58,105. So there is a lot of options in a $70k+ Golf R.
If someone seriously wants the options which push the price up $12k to $19k (as some people have mentioned with their drive away prices), they would also want these options, or at least some of them in the more expensive cars like the S3 or the 135i....
You could argue that they could compromise on the options in the more expensive car... well, they could compromise on the options in the Golf R too... so either way, suggesting to spend $20k more to get an S3 or 135i really doesn't make sense

Interesting comments.
Remember you're coming out of modified cars when comparing to standard cars, so naturally, most will fill slightly dull.
I think anyone chasing bigger numbers (apart from a tune and intake) the R will be good, should have much greater potential, being AWD and all.

Also, as mentioned very early in this thread, although the price difference between the Golf GTI and R may be $9500, after you factor in the Xenons, Front & Rear PDC, Paint, Tint, and 18" wheels, the difference is much lower - more like ~$4400, for which you get an engine with much more headroom, better brakes, better suspension etc. Then your chipped R will have 240kw and 435NM and pull so hard the Polo and Golf GTI owners will be left for dead

I'm driving an XR6 Turbo right now and the R beats it in every single way, outright power isn't everything. Unless you live on a drag strip?

No that's fair enough, but spend that extra "$4,400" on the GTI in the right places and would it not be a quicker car, both straight line and on the track. Not everyone is chasing options. Most here I would have to say are chasing performance. A Polo on the other hand, spend the extra $30,000+ grand, what do you end up with?? At the end of day, for the money I was expecting a bit more from it being the flagship VW hot hatch.
I understand you've ordered one and my thread can come across to you as bagging it maybe (certainly not that way), but we are all entitled to our own opnion and I don't appreciate you moving it hidden to the back of your own thread which its not even related to. My thread was about my own test drive experience, not your pricing and specifications info and chatter. Can you please move it back to its own thread where is belongs so people can comment and have their own opinions.
Dave, as I said, it's just my opinion. People are after different things in a car. Options don't interest me at all. I chase performance characteristics along with many other tuners on here.

Rhys

I didn't move your thread to hide it. First there is a thread redirection which is visible for everyone to see. Secondly, this is the Golf R thread, everyone who's driving it are putting their opinions there. As I said to you in the private message, if everyone started a thread for every car they test drove, then this place would quickly become a useless resource of thousands of threads.

I took one for a quick spin at the dealers today. Wasn't that blown away by it, heaps of lag as mentioned (perhaps some of it would tune out). Does have a nice firm feel to it and like the cabin noise but my APR retuned GTI felt much faster and responsive. Guess the R would be good on an open track.
Will post up some pics soon, highway have a blue DSG demo with the back 19", also have a black R in the show room.
