Lucas r I couldn't agree more, just gotta convince the misses! $18000 total investment I could have bought something close to brand new! First ever VW and most likely my last!

Unfortunately for many people their 1st venture into a VW is a 118TSI......they were a good proposition when new and even 2nd hand you get a lot of car for the money.......but that engine is a nightmare and the 7speed DSG gearbox isn't much better.
On this forum and another Aussie VW forum i look at there would be several hundred nightmare stories of issues with 118TSI's. And by "issues" i don't mean an oil leak, i mean engine has blown up. Some people have had their engine either rebuilt or replaced several times!!

I don't understand how these vehicles are fine when test driving prior to purchase and suddenly die on the drive home.

Well the shuddering only kicks in when the car has been running for well over 15-20 mins. There are many reasons for it;
Many car owners modify their cars, then revert back to stock before they sell it.
Many drivers also drive with the check engine light for a very long time, completely ignoring manufacturer's recommendations to drive to the workshop.
Many car owners also service and repair their cars themselves, without having any mechanical knowledge, right tools and equipment, which also leads to that they don't have to use the right oils and parts and fit them correctly.

That's why you ensure you check the log books and carry out a revs check... They don't carry out a combustion test during an inspection... Far from happy here....118TSI has been nothing but problems. Initially the engine was pulled apart due to the fuel issue I think around the 3 month mark so covered by warranty. There was a recall in there as well somewhere. Another issue with a Mechatronics failure (couldn't even start car and being parked 5pm in a Westfields was fun) just outside of warranty and they did cover it with good will. EPC light came on yesterday with shudders. I take it to VW Kirrawee today and they have just rung to advise piston needs replacing and it will cost $5400. I went off at them of course and she advised she would put a goodwill claim through. She came back to say it got knocked back but they have put in a 2nd which will take 24-48 hours to process. Looking at this thread Piston failures are an issue with this car? How should I approach this? $5400 I don't want to pay and the car is probably only worth twice that now with 110K on the clock?__________________

Search my post history, i've discussed this a few times. A used engine (from a wrecker) replacement is about $3-3,500. installed. I had it done last year. Ok...thanks for the response MK R. VW have come back and advised the parts no charge on good will. That leaves me paying $1800 for labour which they won't budge on. Obviously a better outcome than the original $5400 but still just leaves me exasperated. Engine pulled off inside 3 months and recall inside a couple of years...how much has that contributed to this? How many piston problems are out there? Clearly with paying for parts there is an implied responsibility for the problems? I have little choice but to move on from the Golf now. Yeah, it's a shame they designed such a cool engine and cheaped out on the quality of a few key parts. They can be made into strong, reliable engines with a little work. I'd be relatively happy with the $1,800 bill. Now your decision is whether to sell out or stick with the devil you know... The 2.0 TDI Mk6 was a pretty tough little car, they didn't have too much wrong with them. Yeah....unfortunately this makes the decision for us. Wife won't touch VW again. I am not naive enough to think there are not dissatisfied customers of all brands but I guess all we can do in the future is to ensure a long warranty and sell before warranty runs out!
