Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • The best outcome is to get some form of commitment from VWA before heading down the path of a $2k diagnosis.

    They should be able to tell you by the age of the vehicle, km and service history what you are going to be offered in terms of goodwill repair.

    You can then determine whether to tip the $ into diagnosis at a dealer or go the second-hand engine route at a reputable independent.

      Well well I am
      Not sure where to start. The car is still at VW castle hill waiting for a diagnostic check. I spoke to VW Australia before taking my car to the service centre. The service centre has been extremely difficult and now over two months and they started the checks. Ow. My car has only done under 60ks, I put it to them how it is, it doesn't meet the consumer expectation regarding quality. I have contacted ACCC who have advised that me that I do have rights to contact the manufacturer first hand and ask them for repair which I did. I haven't lodged a good will claim as yet as I need to wait for the so called diagnostic check.

      Bottom line is how you have kept the car, how ks and regular servicing. I think it's crap that they use the servicing of car being done somewhere else as an excuse of so many engines breaking down.

      I have contacted a federal government body who has advised me that if we all lodged complaint about the same problem then the issue will be investigated and they may call VW for a recall on these cars.

      • I guess at the end of the day it depends on how much noise we can make. It's unfair and unacceptable for an engine to die so early in life.

        I would also suggest for everyone to start reading cases where we can share here and use them to back up our argument.

        There are cases on the nsw or any other state tribunal websites as well as austli website.

        • Any updates to share? I'm still waiting for a response to the claim a dealer has submitted for my car (which was re-diagnosed by the dealer last Friday).
          Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

          • So even tho I have issues with my newly acquired 2010 Golf TSI, the mere fact it's done 190,000 and still running is def a plus it appears! ...

            • hi all. ufortunately i have another to add here. my wifes 2009 golf with 59k has just done an engine. one cylinder has no compression apparently due to a shrunken/melted piston. dealer asked vw to assist but was refused so options now are to scrap or pay 10k for a new engine. gutted to say the least. this was the first new car we have ever bought and has totally turned us of the vw brand.

              im going to contact vw directly monday but im not expecting much luck. any tips on how i should proceed?

              • That sucks, especially with no assistance from VW. I'm absolutely sick of them right now.

                Give them hell on social media for a start.

                  That sucks, but to help other here can you provide some more info?
                  You bought the car from new right? Have you have a full VW Dealer Service History?
                  Service schedule is 12mths or 15,000kms (whichever comes first).
                  What symptoms did you experience?
                  Was the Engine Warning light on for sometime? Or did it just not start one day?

                  $10k for an engine is out of the question (can be done for cheaper).

                  As for Volkswagen, more often than not they are will help!
                  Don't dismiss them yet...

                  • thanks for the replies. the main sticking point with vw apparently is we had the services done on the km's, not the time. initially when we bought the car my wife was doing under 5000kms a year so annual services seemed excessive. hindsight is great right now...

                    yes the car was bought new. we were arranging to book in for the 60k service when the epc light came on about 10kms from home one day. we rang the dealer but they couldn't look at it for a week or so so they said drive home slowly and bring it in afterwards.

                    11k was the quote from vw. any suggestions about alternatives? basically its worth nothing unrepaired so i think we have to get it done. ive got a name for a local euro part supplier who might be able to source a used engine (hopefully) but it will still be an expensive repair.

                    • @bensl, not sure whereabouts you are in VIC but give Andrew from VolkService a call and say Ryan sent you. If he asks who that is, the other guy with a Mk6 118TSI Golf with failed piston rings.

                            • thanks for all the replies. i just spoke with vw who are not interested in helping unless i have the engine pulled apart and have a full diagnosis done (at my expense). if it is then deemed to be a manufacturing fault, they might be able to assist. very helpful...

                              i think plan b will be to source a reco'd engine from somewhere. any ideas? there is a local bloke who is looking but he says they are hard to find.

                                This might not make sense but the dealer needs to cover themselves. VWA won't cover cost unless the dealer produces evidence of manufacturing fault. Manufacturing fault can't be determined until the strip down. The dealer won't do the strip down without assurance that someone will pay for the labour be it the customer if manufacturing fault isn't found or VWA if manufacturing fault is found and approved.

                                Bloody sucks as not everyone can (a) afford to have their car off the road for any period of time and (b) the actual stumping up of $ with the risk totally being worn by the customer.

                                I've not been in this situation so I cannot comment directly but I hope that a nicely worded email/letter to VWA along the lines of
                                (a) known issue
                                (b) all external / non-strip down tests point to the known issue failure
                                (c) we can't come up with the $ for the tear down to prove.
                                (d) help!

                                Might get you somewhere.

                                Easy to write harder to implement but with so many having this issue surely VWA could be persuade to help with or without ACCC/Consumer affairs/MTAA prodding them. Sadly with the class action over diesel-gate (which VWA will win in my humble opinion) they're busy with bigger fish.
