    • can someone tell me 2 things:
      1) how can you view iphone video on rns510 (video in motion? what part how (professional?) to install it where is it placed...) I do have rev cam factory installed. I have seen some posts on you-tube but not really much detail..
      2) is there any 3rd party plug that can bridge MDI cable and Iphone so that "accessory connected" splash screen is not on...?

      • 1. I've seen video-in adapters for the RNS-510 - I'm not sure where you'd route the cables or how messy it would look though.

        2. You're other option would be to connect your phone via the 3.5mm AUX jack (usually inside the center console), but then you wouldn't be able to use the steering wheel controls to select or skip songs.

        • As a follow up to this, and one quick question. By chance, I found (and it may well be in the manual but I missed it), those with RNS510 but no phone - if you push the phone button while the ipod is playing, it both mutes and pauses. Push it again and it starts again.

I'm confused as to why the ''phone' button on the steering wheel does not do the same since it would be so easy. And it would seem this is a button that is not functioning at all.

Can those with MDI and RNS510 just check this for me on their vehicles please? Cheers

          • The Microphone button on the wheel does the pausing - I installed the RNS 510 and Bluetooth and decided to keep the button used for that instead of voice control due to personal preference.

Mine behaves exactly as yours does.

My mic button activates voice control (and yes, pauses the music). I never use voice control, so if I want to pause whatever's playing, I use the phone button on the headunit.

If there is an easy way to code the Phone button on the wheel to perform the same function as on the headunit, I'm all ears!

There's nothing specific in the PDF that I can make out (it's dated 2010), but the update itself is linked as KW22 2011 - so build week 22. It's definitely a later firmware than the KW22 2010 firmware listed on my-gti.com. I've just applied it to my MDI and it seems to work a treat.

                Update KW22/2011 MDI Firmware

Installation instructions (from my-gti.com KW22/2010 page):
                • Download the firmware (see link above)
                • Copy the file mdi.bin.enc in the root (top) level of a USB flash drive and insert this into the USB cable.
                • Turn the headunit on or start the car and the update will proceed. If the MDI is selected the status will be displayed.
                • After around 1 minute the update will complete and the USB flash drive may be removed.
I tried to apply this update but the screen displayed that the software update is not possible?

                • After having the firmware update for over 6 weeks now, I still get the occassional skip using the iPod. Nowhere near as much as before, but still annoying.

Sounds like you already have it?

Remember that you'll only see the update status if your head unit is in MDI mode when you plug in the USB stick. If it's not, you might find that the MDI will be updated, but you won't know. If you then switch to MDI mode, eject and reinsert the USB stick, you'd get that message - solely because the unit is now up to date.

Failing that... check the USB stick is formatted FAT (not NTFS, HFS+, EXT2 etc etc), and that the update bin file is correctly named and in the root directory of the USB device. If that all checks out, re-download the file, reformat the USB stick, rince and repeat.

                    • I probably have updated it already because I re-downloaded the file onto a different USB but it's still the same.

                      • ok researching a bit more on MDI + Ipod and "accesory connected" splash screen, seems this can only be fixed if we jailbreak our phones....anyone here has tried it?

                        • You might be better off asking that on some sort of iPhone forum

                          • I have read through the 47 (!) pages of this thread trying to work out if my MDI 'niggles' are standard or can be addressed.

I have a three week old Golf wagon 90TSI trendline. It came fitted with MDI and bluetooth and was supplied with an iPod/iPhone cable rather than the USB type cable. Radio/CD is the RCD310. The bluetooth works fine, but having issues with the file structure of music stored on my iPhone 3GS. When I plug the iPhone to the cable I get the standard splash screen saying that the accessory is not supported. If I select media, the only file structure I see for the iPhone is 'songs' (or 'music' or something similar...) and all songs are listed alphabetically. As you can imagine, this is pretty darn useless. There are no albums or playlists viewable or selectable. I have found that if I select iPod on the phone, then select an album and start to play the first song BEFORE I plug in the media cable, the songs will sequence in the correct order through the RCD310.

I see that some have elected to place their music on a USB stick to solve the issue. I don't have the cable (have one on order through ePay). I would prefer to be able to access songs/albums/playlists on iPhone as I like the convenience of having the device charge while using (bluetooth etc can drain the battery, plus I am often getting in the car returning home from a work trip where the phone battery is likely to be pretty low) and like being able to use navigation apps on the phone with the associated muting of music while directions given etc.

I have a USB cable on order, so will be able to load the new software when it arrives. Any suggestions or workarounds for the iPhone file browsing issue?

                            Regards...

                            • I get the following from memory:

                              Playlists
                              Songs
                              Artists
                              Albums
                              Podcasts

But I have an RNS510, so maybe it is that?

What firmware do you have on your iphone?

                              • Just thought I'd add my 2 cents to this. I have the same problem many people are experiencing with the MDI & iPhone.

I've got an iPhone 3GS running firmware 4.1.3 (or whatever the latest one is). My car is a Golf R MY11.5 with factory fitted MDI.

Everything works great, but if I have the iPhone plugged in (before) I turn on the car, the MDI doesn't pick up the iPhone. It's only if I unplug and plug back in, or plug it in after the car is started that it works as expected. However, if I have the iPhone playing music, then I turn the car off, then back on again at a later time - the iPhone plays music through the cars headunit for about 10 seconds (until bluetooth reconnects) then the MDI interface gets dropped. To fix this is a unplug/plug back in.

It doesn't bother me - but I just thought I'd let people know that it's still an issue in MY11.5 builds.
