  • Sorry for late reply, but yes, my setup is exactly the same as DreamensioN with exactly the same symptoms. I updated the head unit software and still the same issue with menuing, but not sure about plug/unplug issues, as I just wait to plug in now out of habit. Would be good if they came up with a fix...

    • I've mentioned this before, but I actually think this is more of an Apple fault than VW. The iPhone (3GS and 4) does not have a default output option so will default the sound output to the most recent device - therefore as soon as bluetooth pairs, it selects this as the output.

Unless the BT can connect in super record time or the iPhone can have a default output mode I can't see this problem being resolved by VW.

      • Thanks orkers. That may be the case, but for me the most inconvenient thing is the menuing. If I want to play an album, I have to disconnect the cord, select the album in ipod, start to play, then plug back in. If I had to wait to plug it in after car started and then the menuing worked properly for the whole time I was driving, I could live with that. Apple/VW, I am not sure whose fault it is, I just want to be able to use the feature

        • The fact you get a very limited menu is strange - I'll grab my Son's 3GS and see if it is a 3GS problems as with the iphone4 I definitely get songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, genres etc.

I think Orkers is right. I had my iphone connected tonight, and I disabled the bluetooth. The MDI worked when the car was on, and when I turned the engine off, and back on again - the MDI was the only thing to reconnect and the iphone started playing music as expected.

So yeah - it's probably the iPhone, and not VW that's the issue.

            • I had a passenger with an iPhone 3G (I think) and got them to connect it up via the iPod cable, after a small delay their content appeared on the RNS510, but the audio was all choppy and distorted (it was playing music before it was connected, not sure if that's a problem). I noticed it said 'Device connected' but didn't have the VW logo on the phone. Also, the skip buttons on the steering wheel didn't work - the sound just cut out for half a second then continued. By contrast, connecting my USB thumb stick works perfectly. I also have the 3.5mm AUX MDI adapter (as well as the original car AUX input), but neither have functioned since installing the MDI.

I installed the latest firmware a few months ago (perhaps there's a new version out since). Has anyone had this problem before?

              • Not sure if anyone has asked if there is a way around this. To me this niggle is top of the list.

When browsing through the songs, the system does not remember where you are positioned. When you take your fingers off to attend to something else, you are returned to the current song screen after a few seconds. Then you have to press 'Selection' and start all over again. If you have a large number of albums and songs, you will know what I mean.

Is there a way around this?

                • That would be more a RNS510 niggle I think (same thing happens with other drives). Don't think there's any workaround for it.

                  • Would be nice if the rns manufacturers had a forum where customers can log in suggestions for product improvement. Maybe there is one already but I don' know where. Would be a nice feature to be in the next firmware upgrade.

                    • I think they're made by a company called Continental (they also make the system in the new fancy Holdens). They might not have forums, but some Googling might reveal a contact email address.

                      • You're assuming that the OEM writes the firmware/software and not Volkswagen...

                        • I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this or posted about it, I couldn't find anything?

There have been a number of posts on the "skipping" issue at the beginning of tracks from an ipod. After downloading the firmware update a few months ago, I initially thought it was fixed, but back it came. Sometimes I would get no skipping at all for days on end, then it would be back with seemingly no rhyme or reason? Well I now know what causes it.

Manually skipping (fast forwarding) to the next track starts the problem. If I do not use the skip function, my music will play seamlessly without the issue. If I do manually skip to the next track, turning the 510 off and on again gets rid of the skipping.

Plan is to make sure that all the music on my ipod is actually stuff I want to listen to

                            • By default, none I think, unless you're able to persuade the dealer to chuck one in. Otherwise you can get them from Ebay for $30ea.

[+] Apparently you get the USB connector by default, ignore the above.
