What if you moved the playlist file into the same dir as the mp3s (modifying the playlist entry and removing the "mp3s" song directory structure) and renaming the playlist file to something like "_name_of_playlist.m3u". If you were to then select media, the mp3 folder would appear and the playlist file would be the first item and you could select it straight away?
I'm already ahead of you there MFK, on Monday evening I made another playlist in the MP3 directory using WMP and was rather hoping it would automatically fire up in the car, but it didn't. What happens is that the MP3s start to play in alpha order and ignore the playlist. I had to search for the playlist in the root directory to get the songs playing in my preferred sequence. This morning I was playing a CD in the car so I didn't bother searching for the playlist in the MP3s directory. I'll try that this evening on my way home from work.
Our IT guy at work thought that the playlist would kick in automatically, I can now state categorically that it doesn't.
Incidentally, the CD I was playing this morning was one comprising my own tunes and performances. I burned it with Nero for a work colleague but I needed to check that it would play all right. I went into the properties of each tune in Nero and filled in the title and artist fields. I'm pleased to say that the title of each track displays on the MDI. The track number flashes on the screen briefly to be replaced by the title.
I wonder if you were to place the playlist file in the same directory of the music files, renammed the playlist file so it appears as the first item in the dir (AAA_Playlist) but rather than giving it an file extension of M3U, change it to MP3. Now (hopefully) when the unit loads, it attempts to play the first mp3 (actually the playlist in this case) and if it hasnt errored by now, it might then work out that is a Playlist file and proceed to play the music in the playlist!
Just a thought .. I cant try it as i dont have my car as yet.
It's software, not hardware, and yeh - tried that. It doesn't always work
what you get when your only reset button is software based (design fault)
Well, it's at the firmware level, so yes, it's still software - as is the case with so many reset mechanisms these days. When your device has a hdd and has to manage complex I/O, sometimes that's the only option.
I would suggest that if your iPod isn't resetting when following those instructions, I'd be following the full restore process, and if that doesn't work, returning it for a replacement. (Or, if you're really lucky, a refund!)
Picked up our new Golf GTI MkVI the other week, our first VW (after 20 years of Subaru's) and overall very happy.
However, I still seem to be struggling with getting playlists going on the RNS510 and would welcome comments from others on what works for them.
What I have
I am running a dealer installed RNS510 with the 2760 Firmware.
Following the firmware update, it is successfully reading an 8GB SDHC card. I have my music organised on the card in iTunes format, ie Artist / Album / Track all grouped under a single root directory on the SD card that I happen to call "TopMusic", a single directory to make copying and deleting easier once I'm ready to copy everything onto the HD.
ie the directory structure looks like
SD Card:/TopMusic/Artist Name/Album Name/Track Number Song Name.mp3
What's not working
The challenge I have is creating m3u playlists. I can get it to read and display the list of songs on the Playlist, but on trying to play any of the tunes I get an error of
The Playlist files cannot be found.
I've tried various permutations within the playlist file of:
Windows v Linux directory structures
Relative paths v absolute
Windows (CR/LF) v Linux (NL) line breaks
no combination of which is yet working for me.
So far I've kept the iTunes M3U extended format, ie the file has a header and a description line for each file, eg
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:515,American Pie (Original Version) - Don McLean
/TopMusic/Don McLean/American Pie/01 American Pie (Original Version).mp3
Ideas ?
Would appreciate hearing from anyone that has playlists working well for them as to the exact format their playlists took.

I merged your post into this thread since they've just been discussing this on the last few pages.
Looking at your specific issue, I think that firstly you need to get rid of the / before Top music... and then after that all forward slashes should be backslashes. So:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:515,American Pie (Original Version) - Don McLean
TopMusic\Don McLean\American Pie\01 American Pie (Original Version).mp3
Next, you'd then need to have the playlists in the directory level above "TopMusic". So if TopMusic is in the root, the playlists also need to be in the root.
Try that, and also check out other peoples posts in the last few pages, and see how that goes
GTIV6, the slashes in the file locations are incorrect. Should be \ (backslash) NOT / (forward slash) and you don't start the file location with a slash. See post No 286 in this thread.
Coreying, you can have playlists in the same directory as the music files, and they can be WPL format, too. I found out by accident that WPL is supported when I inadvertently saved one as such. But finding the playlists isn't that straightforward. I'll jot down some instructions and report back.
Hi ktrianta,
Re your rattle, Check the Drip tray under your Cappuccino Machine in the Boot. Our one inside sometimes comes loose as well and that is just sitting on a bench.
Otherwise, check you are not putting the cups to close together on the top, they might rattle as you go round corners.

Hi Frankenstrat, yes, I realise that you can have the playlists in the same directory as the music files, but if you have the full path in the playlist, will it still play the files?
E.g. You load a playlist in the "Music" folder where your mp3 files are. And your playlist says the files are Music\song.mp3. Some players will then fail to play the music, as the player then tries to play Music\Music\song.mp3 - which doesn't exist. Other players are smart enough to understand and correct for the user putting the playlist in the wrong location...
Which is why I suggested the actions that I did to ktrianta, as just in case the MDI/RCD510 does not compensate for this, it'll definitely work by putting the playlists in the root.
