  • Is it possible to load older firmware on the MDI? Could be the latest one that mucks up the sound??

It's the headunit doing it (if by much up the sound you mean a slight pause between tracks)

Yep I meant the slight pause, sound itself is fine. It's just that my RNS510 and older RCD510 didn't do it??

So anyone using an iPod with RNS510 & factory fit MDI getting a gap in the playback?

Yep, with an iPhone. I just tested the playback and there is a pause a fraction of a second after the song transition. A note of the song actually plays, then the pause, then restarts - very noticeable. A USB drive on the MDI doesn't exhibit the same type of pause - there is simply a pause between songs. Although this may be due to the way the music has been ripped. I don't use the iPod/iPhone very often so I hadn't really noticed until I just tested it. Tracks do not pause when playing on the iPhone speaker.

The CD player transitions smoothly, but the media slot and HDD both exhibit pauses between songs. Again, this may be the ripping of the tracks, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's not. Doesn't bother me too much, but would be nice if it was as smooth as a PC. I'll have to double-check my tracks in iTunes.

My RNS510 is probably going to be replaced anyway since the unit's Phone button and steering wheel Phone/Mute button often refuses to mute/pause the system when the unit is set to Media. Switching it to Radio and back again often fixes it. It's never happened on Radio, but I don't use it often. Just took it into the service centre and they said all the electrics were fine - the unit receives the signal, but it just doesn't have the desired effect.

            • Thanks for the reply, shame this stuff is getting a bit buggy, as I never got that pause using the ipod/iphone with the last media kit i retrofitted with the long cable. Something must be different with the wiring or the factory one could be a plug in thing??

A short gap between tracks is normal for SD/HDD/USB/iPod with MP3's as the MP3's have some silence encoded in the tracks (actually an Audio CD with burnt mp3's will do it too), but it definitely shouldn't play the first fraction of the song, pause then start again. Apple lossless wont produce a gap on the ipod/iphone.

If i didn't have the VW camera i'd consider putting in an Alpine or Eclipse in, but nothing that super good around at the moment anyway IMO.

Hi mate, the car popped up ready for delivery so grabbed it. I still have my Dyn set from my last car, just not sure if i'll do 3-way pillar pods (as the MK5 was 3-way) or just swap for 2-way crossovers and do a stealth install. The audio upgrades wouldnt be worth it though if there are gaps in the playback so not sure yet.

I think the factory Dynaudio is good value for $1,500 if you don't have speakers/amps already and are doing a new order. Not really worth it if it delays the order though as long as you go to a good audio installer.

Congrats on the new car. Would be a nice ride. Yeah not worth the long wait if you have a system sitting around.

Wasn't planning it but a bit good to pass up (and don't really want to spend too much again).

                      • maybe its just best to use aux in if you have iphone, since if u have navigation you get voice command, or incoming phone call when iphone mutes ....

It would be Better if vw fixed the problem! My car audio setup would almost be perfect if it wasn't for this.

                          • A different MDI issue

                            Hi all,

I have a different MDI issue. This occurs whether using an iPod, iPhone or just a USB drive; I have both cables. Oh, it's a dealer fit in the glove box.

What happens is that the right channel sounds perfect but the left channel is distorted and has no bass no matter what device is used or what track is playing. It's quite obvious when you adjust the balance to isolate one side at a time.

This issue doesn't happen with any other source (radio, CD, SD). Mind you I have an altogether different issue with SD playback (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f78/...0-a-43577.html).

Any thoughts? It would be a pain to have to take it to the dealer just for this.

                            Cheers.

Take it to the dealer, one of the connections has a problem.

Sometimes it plays fine without gap but the other times the gap will appear... It doesnt bother me much though as the pause isn't too noticeable. But I did notice that the sound quality seems to be better from playing CDs than from my iPhone.
