  • Hi, Clearly there is something that isnt quite right with the operation of the vehicle u mentioned, it may well be a small issue that a relearn (base settings procedure may cure, but if its not then it may escalate into a more sinister repair such as a mechatronic replacement or a clutch issue, We replace a lot of mechatronic units on these transmissions so i would be wary.

    • 103TDI DSG issue. What is this noise? (video)

Hey guys. I bought my 09 Mk6 103TDI about a year ago. Moderate mileage (165k). It's been a dream and I love it... with the exception of DSG quirks... or what I presume to be DSG quirks. Nothing catastrophic, but issues still apparent enough to put a damper on the driving experience. The main problem arises with upshifts at low RPMs. It's magnified when I'm on a downward slope like in the video below. I feel a slight interruption to revs and then this clicking / clunking sound (about 3 times very rapidly in succession). I'm confident this isn't normal. It feels like something is going to break when it happens.

      Noise at 14 seconds:

Does anyone here have any theories? The more info I have the better I can explain the issue to mechanics next time it goes in for service. Cheers for any advice.

(Apologies to mods if this is in the wrong place)

      • Sorry, I've not heard of that one...is it always in odd or even gears? Does it only happen say 2-3 or 3-4? Taking notes when it happens with relation to the gears helps work out where the problem may lie, as one DSG clutch drives even gears, the other one odd, and if you can narrow it down to a particular shift, say 2-3, that may indicate a problem with just that particular syncro ring, shift arm or piston mechanism, depending on where the noise happens.

Given all the DSG woes that there have been in the past, no doubt someone will know exactly what it is....

        • Thanks for that. The clunking / clicking noise in the video occurs most prominently going from 3 - 4, and a road decline seems necessary to replicate it. In general there seems to be quite a bit of looseness to the drivetrain if that makes sense? It's particularly noticeable for example going around a low speed corner in back streets. I'll ease off the throttle as I go around and then go to reapply as I exit the corner and there's a clicking or clunking sound as I do this. Almost like a clutch re-engaging maybe. I'm not that knowledgeable with car mechanics so this is all speculation. Just thought someone here may have seen this kind of thing before.

          • May not be gearbox at all. Have you checked your CV joints?

            • Yeah good call. Corners on and off the gas is CV joints more likely! Hunt around and find a cheap inspection at one of the car chain stores like Ultratune, any guy should be able to pick CV's.

              • Isn't the dry clutch noisy anyway? From factory I could hear gear changes at low speeds and I've now done 112k km with only the mechatronic replaced.

                • Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll keep CV joints in mind as a possibility. That wouldn't explain the clicking / clunking in video though during the shift from 3 - 4 as I'm driving in a straight line? Perhaps I'm potentially looking at 2 separate issues here

3 things are key to smooth dsg especially the 6 speed. Oil changes as per service manual. Dsg adaptions at the same time and also all mounts are in good order. A failing engine mount on higher kms will also cause rattles and vibrations on take off, stopping and in reverse. Been there and done that on 2 gti's i have had. It works every time. More so I think the engine mounts especially on cars pushing 150000kms of heavy use in traffic.

                    • Guys after some advice on my significant others Golf DSG, it's 2012 77tsi so is the dry 7 speed. Love the DSG especially in sport mode and had no issues until recently when I noticed a leak, booked it in to be looked at an have it's 60 thou service but earliest it can be done is mid June. Tonight the service icon started flashing along with the gear indicator so I know it needs attention now. Being the car is one year out of warranty how likely are they to fix this issue for us and does the DSG have more than 3 years warranty and would that cover leaks rather than just the usual internal stuff.

                      • Fight for goodwill. It's not reasonable to expect a leak so early and there is ZERO preventative maintenance one can do to it so faults like this VW should be handling with little resistance.

                        • That is what I am thinking, always been serviced on time at same dealer so that should help.

                          • Try this one on for size.

7 speed dry clutch dsg (dq200) has literally a half second grinding noise when engine breaking after WOT in gear 2 and 4 around 4000 rpm. Usually occurs in manual mode but heard the noise once in sport mode. Have not tried it in 6th yet. Noise is not repeated consistently. ZERO error codes when checked via VCDS. Power delivery is unaffected. Car drives as normal in all modes(D, S and manual).

Anyone has ideas as to what this could be?

                            • Quick update on my car, turns out it is the mechatronics and VW has offered to cover 60% leaving us a bill of $1000 for a car under 4 years old.

                              • They can do better. They did better for me. Full cost of mechatronic and I only paid au $200 in labour. Car was nearly three years old though.
