  • Not familiar with the 7 speed but is the service interval the same as the 6 speed DSG i.e. 60,000 kms ? Or does it/can it even be serviced being a dry box ?

If there is no service interval for it (or if the necessary service was done, if it required it), I'd be gunning for the 100% of the cost ...

      No service interval whatsoever.

      • Speaking with VW now. Funnily enough its now due for 60 thou service that would include changing gearbox oil and filter, what is the bet they will try and double dip.

So does it or doesn't it need a service ?

You'd understand their concern if it was a modified car but not being a performance model with loads of torque going through it .. I'd try for 100% goodwill all the way. I mean, unless they can prove abuse or neglect, it's pretty piss poor for it to happen to a 4 year old car, let alone telling you to fork out $1,000 for it. Good luck !

          • Yes at 60thou the 7 speed is meant to have oil and filter changed, mine has not yet reached 60 thou. Yeah a whole 77kw should never stress any gearbox.

Dealers will always try it out and speaking up never hurts. Well done mate, that's how it should have been from Day 1 of the problem surfacing.

                      • My DSG story. I bought a used mk6 R, private sale, one owner with all serving done by VW. About a week after I had the car I noticed a click/clunking on downshifts, mainly between 3-2, but it was audible from 5-4 sometimes. It also felt a bit 'forced' when downshifting from 3-2. I've read a bunch of forum posts, some saying its normal, some saying its not. Took it to VW for a service and asked them to check out the noise. Initially, they thought a software update may be the solution. The software update didn't fix the problem so they kept the car to perform further tests. In the end they replaced the gearbox. The new gearbox is completely silent. There are no noises and the shifts are silky smooth. So, if you're buying a used VW, listen for any weird noises!

Thankfully, it was still covered by the extended factory warranty so I didn't have to cough up the $11k it cost to fix!

Yep.. a new gearbox costs just shy of $10k then there's the labour cost.
