Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I've had one on order for some time but apparently lost any spot I had in the queue when I changed the order (sadly this was never explained properly to me at the time.. I'd have kept it the same otherwise as it appears this may blow my wait out to 6-8 months).
I bought from Solitaire. They told me that they have had about 8 GTI's on order for general stock since mid January this year, so they infact have been in the system for ages. But the advantage for me has been that as those cars haven't been allocated to specific customers, I had the opportunity to put my name against one of them and as I stated before, they could change the spec to my requirements without losing the spot in the Queue. Within a week of ordering, I was told that that "batch" of cars ordered in mid january has now been given a scheduled build date as stated before. I think that this was a situation of being lucky to get my name on one of those cars before the build schedule.
I would expect now that those cars ordered for general stock in that batch will also be locked in so if someone ordered a car that didn't conform to one of those that the dealer spec'd, would have to wait at the end of the queue.
By the way, before ordering my car, I had my dealer check about what stock was around the country and "on the water" for other dealers to see if there was something that suited my spec and there was nothing in DSG. There's plenty of manuals around but bugger all DSG. "If" the dealer you are negotiating with managed to find a vehicle that was on it's way to another dealer that met your spec, then the challenge would be for them to convince that dealer to part or swap cars to something else. I think that this is unlikely due to the fact that all the dealers want to get their hands on as much DSG stock as possible, so they will be reluctant to part with whatever they have allocated to them.
I also think that the Motor BFYB win for GTI is probably going to make the situation worse, so if you are "thinking" about ordering a GTI, get in quick !

Thanks for the advice though.. looks like I may need to cancel the order and hit up the interstate dealers as advised a few posts above.
Update: spoke to Fergus' contact and they advised I was also in a week 38 build - looks like we may score our cars late November/early December <fingers crossed>

I ordered my GTI (5-door, red, DSG, 18", Leather, RVC, Xenons, MDI, tint) on the 12th March 2010 and received on the 5th August.....the day I had to leave to go snowboarding in New Zealand. I only got to drive 100km in my first new car, before I had to park it in long-term parking at the airport
I got back from NZ yesterday and have spent all day driving the car and absolutely love it.
I am getting up at 3am tomorrow and going to drive it from the Gold Coast to Mount Isa (1871km) in a single day. I have done several trips of this length (1. Cairns --> Gold Coast & 2. Melbourne --> Gold Coast) both in about 20 hours and that was in a 1997 Nissan Pulsar. I think I should be able to better my time with my brand new GTI
I was also wondering what the most km's anyone has put on their car in the first few days? I will have done over 2000km in 3 days of ownership by tomorrow evening!!
