Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yay! Not sure about the silly red ribbon!
Only problem is to get it in 2 weeks, i had to miss out on DCC (there was no way i was going to wait 6 or 7 months, would get cold feet or something better might come out by then!). This 6sp manual was found in Brisbane, Chatswood found it up there, 2 weeks from looking at maybe getting an R to now in the garage. Has sunroof and satnav as only non standard options.
Coming from a 2001 WRX...certainly has a lot of bells and whistles, although the Rex was a bit tweaked and reckon it would give it a bit of a run for its money in a traffic light drag (i didn't want dsg.....)

Early impressions of the manual is there are a lot more gear changes than the Subaru with the VW (much!) closer ratio gearbox, that is for sure. In the Subaru, in 50/60zones, I often just stayed in 3rd gear since the RPM was so low in 4th it would strain a little. I have never had a 6speed before, when going back up through the gears, when, say, coming off the freeway, it is hard to know if I have pulled the right slot
The reason I didn't go the DSG was I found, while it was awesomely quick for gear changes (e.g. flooring it from the lights) it wasn't 100% connected, say, when going around a twisty road, it would change gears (or not!) right when you weren't really expecting it, not so good for total car control when I was used to using the throttle to pull through fast corners. I suppose I should have asked the dealer how to have complete manual control of the DSG when test driving it.
Another quirk I notice with the manual is when it is stalled (takes a bit of getting used to putting it into 1st instead of 3rd DOH and new clutch/car to get used to), it needs to be completely switched off and on to restart it, not so good when on the actual road!
And now it is pouring down with rain here, the car has lost it's oomph in 1st gear, presumably because traction control is working overtime. Apart from the R's wide torque band, I really think the (old) Subaru gives a better kick (I guess because it isn't hindered by a multitude of electronics knowing what is best for the driver). I suppose all DSG owners will pip up here and praise the virtues of launch control on the DSG
Due to being so quiet though (Subie had an aftermarket 3" stainless exhaust..), it is easy to be speeding without realising it (esp with the small graduations on the speedo). Maybe the R is quicker but deceptive due to the smoothness.Last edited by tonymy01; 14-02-2012, 08:03 PM.---
