      The POMs.

      And the Italians,

      and the Americans

and the Swedes.... ah maybe not!

you guys have it all wrong....every VW comes with a mysterious ghost free of charge...it's his job to make random noises in the car, but only while you're in the car by yourself...as proven by me driving with a VW tech a few times, and having the car be completely silent while trying to show him how much it rattles

nice write up Cam....but, there is no way in hell that I have the capability of doing what you've described...can't I just wedge something in there?

The Golf is one of the cheapest of the German cars and you're disappointed at some minor noise? You should lower your expectations as they were unreasonably high. It doesn't matter that the GTI is $45K, it's based on the $25K Golf with go faster bits.

Sorry if the GTi was only 5K to 10K more expensive you might be able to forgive VW but the fact is your paying alot more . VW need to fix the problems on the production line .
I didn't pay 50K to have a loud rattle between the sat/nav and the to top air vents ,only to find out the heater box wasn't even tighted in position .The dealer thought they have fixed but its coming back ,so its going back.

There's nothing wrong with brand loyalty but if there a problem thats showing up more than once VW need to fix .

Would you like a GTI production line where only the best robots and engineers work? Perhaps they use the highest quality plastics and the best fitting components? Meanwhile back in the real world...

You're paying a lot more for the engine, gearbox, suspension, standard inclusions, seats and so on, not for any of the fantasy land stuff I mentioned above.

I'm sure you didn't but neither did the buyer of the $25K base model Golf and they're exactly the same car under the surface, there are no special plastics used because they're a GTI nor are there any magical pixies that spend 10 hours on each GTI to make it that much better than a base model.

I'm sure VW are well aware of that but everything comes at a cost and you've purchased VW's second cheapest car so really expecting Lexus refinement in a VW Golf is ridiculous.

The cost cutting and the supposed reduction of parts complexity doesn't seem to have solved the rattle problems... the improvements seem to have been in vain.

Im sorry but i have to post here. The MAIN reason i left a MAIN dealer is because of a MINDSET a manager had and seems the same as you have. Ill start here only A6 and A8 got washed after a service , what a load of crap. EVERY car should be treated as their A8!!!! If its VWS second cheapest car so what !!!!!!! Ive worked on super cars, yes i pre delivered RS an GT3 Porsches as a job and still treat the 924 as a PORSCHE. This Car may be his Golf R think about it.

We should be thankful it hasn't been major mechanical components coming loose .

Not with mine. Since day 1 the cabin has been as quiet as a mouse wearing socks. I can't flaw the quality of the finish at all.

You're missing the point. I didn't say that the Phaeton owner should get treated differently to the Golf owner which is what you're alluding to.

You can't expect the refinement that that you get in a Volkswagen Phaeton in a Volkswagen Golf but this is what some unreasonable owners expect. The Golf is the second cheapest car that VW sell, it ranges in price from $25K to $70K BUT the core of the car (dash, doors, floor, panels, ceiling and so on) is the same in the $25K Golf as in the $70K Golf R. Expectations that the $50K GTI or the $70K R are magically going to be different are ridiculous.

I only have some minor rattles from the door trims to which I believe is from the dealer not putting them back properly after doing my window tints. The overall quality of the cabin is excellent though.

But if Julia gets up, you'll be able take advantage of the Cash for Clunkers with your Mark V and get into a newer model anyway. I'll be joining you if the airbag light comes on for the 4th time in my Mark V.

Add me to the list of Mark 6 owners with nothing to complain about.

Wouldn't mind the new R actually esp Stg 1 tuned and flapper modded (I could forgive the looks and Nipponesee interior for the lift in performance). WRT MkVI GTI - no soul IMO -sorry but no thanks.

Nothing to complain with two MkVs esp wrt to rattles - I really don't know what all the fuss is about. And one of them has already done over 31K kms.
