If there is a R in the initial batches that matches your order you will have it in June ...... otherwise its a 3+month way I'm afraid.
How does this work with actual final value unknown?
ie, for the guys that have put a deposit down on an R for $65k, at what point do you get to talk to them before they allocate a car and sell it to you for full RRP?
Or is everyone expecting to renegotiate before they take delivery?

Mine is subject to me being satisfied with the price. Technically it means I can say I want to pay $20K and if not walk away, but realistically it means if I expected it to be $60K with my options (based on R32 prices) and its $65K I can walk away. Final negotiation on price therefore still to come, all it did was reserve me an early entry .....

I suspected this when my dealer contacted me last week and didn't have something close enough to what I wanted. Best he had was no sunroof and with SatNav. Was told they could take out the SatNav but no way I'll be buying a brand new car that has had dealer monkeys rip apart a dash.

Waiting 3+ mths will sway me to start looking elsewhere I suspect.

And to throw a spanner in the works...aka rumour mill.

Of course evo1986 fails to inform us (until the UK stock has been sold) R will have modified EA888 280bhp engine and 7 speed DSG with no increase in list price

        • That was a joke though... there has been no announcement on an engine change for the R. There has also been no announcement on a 7 speed DSG which can handle the torque of a GTI/GTD/R.

LOL guess I should have read it more closely! Not true on the DSG though, what is stopping VW borrowing the S3 unit at some point?

            • Just spoke with my dealer again - usual guy Clinton wasn't there so I got the manager.

He said that the first R's that will be allocated for customers will arrive in the next 3-4 weeks as others have said above.

He also said that any requests for an R made NOW will be for an actual new order as he thinks the initial allocation are accounted for.

On Monday he's going to confirm what is availabe on the initial shipment with the VWA supplier and get back to me.

Essentially if there's something close to what I want not already accounted for, ill be making the switch. If I have to order, there's no chance.

Obviously my whole decision has been relying on the RRP being announced and a discount being offered, so any switch will be subject to this.

In the meantime, my GTI is still mine if I want it and it wont be sold from under me until such time as I get to make the decision on the two.

.. within reason of course. Not like I can sit on the GTI for months until the R is here and I can negotiate a discount.

That appears consistant with what I've been told also. They are basically matching all pre-orders with initial allocation stock. I've decided that I'll switch colours and/or options within reason to avoid a longer delay if need be. But my backup choices probably don't help much - add 19's with ACC or existing order in white with black wheels and ACC lol.

                I suck at patience.

I think you find I am correct on the DSG...
... and the S3 has a 6 speed as well - not a 7 speed. I think you'll find it is exactly the same as the 6 speed used on the GTI/GTD/R.

                      • Be interesting to see what you guys are willing to compromise on to get an R early?
This is my spec at present:
                        5 Door DSG = RRP?
                        Rising Blue Pearl Effect
                        RNS510 + Dynaudio = +$3,500
                        Vienna Leather = +$3,300
                        ACC = +$1,500

Considering the 19" as well, but would have to drive it first.
I would drop the RNS510 and Dyn package as that can always be added later, but i'd definetly have the leather and ACC. I like the Rising Blue color best and probably wouldn't switch.

                        • Spoke to a Dealer today he said currently July 1st is the release date, also said he wouldn't have pricing til then which I think is BS and he wanted a $2000 deposit to join the waiting list. Hmmmm it is tempting me 3door DSG in RBPE colour with black wheels yum yum

                          • Of a minor note. The RTA has a threshold at 1504KG where registration goes from $285 to 406 in NSW. This is Tare Weight. I wonder what the official weight for the Golf R will be in Australia... seems it's different for each country so far!

                            • I spoke with my dealer again today about the R. They are trying to find out what stock is still available on the first ship - as I wont be ordering.

Those of you placing deposits now will want to double check this and have a physical car allocated to you.

Otherwise its 6 months wait they said. Basically there's a very slim chance I can get one of the first as most are accounted for now.

Yep and those of us who ordered a long time ago, may still miss out because VWA is just bringing in random stock it seems. The fvckers could have easily brought in the spec I ordered given the lead time!

But I've given my dealer a few colour choices and add some extra options cos I'm not waiting until 2011 for a car. I was offered my original order minus sunroof but that doesn't suit me. After having one, I can't go back to being without!
