  • Another reason to be hesitant to commit to the R .....

Golf MK6 production scheduled to end end 2011 and MK7 production scheduled to start in 2012 ..... see worldcarfans.com for spy pics of the Mk7 doing 'Ring testing .....

Buy a new R in June and you'd have it for 18 months before a new model Golf is out .... I'd be (and am) very hesitant to buy a $60K car only to have it "old" in 18 months time ....

    • MK7 delayed by 8 months

Read an article indicating that due to the favourable reviews and awards given to the Mark 6 Golf, Volkswagen will delay the introduction of the MK7 Golf for 8 months. The MK7 will be wider and @ 20% cheaper to build. The MK6 Golf was purposely made to look wider to bridge the gap of evolution between MK5 and MK7.

      On a positive note re: r_forum.co.uk schedule ... the fuel consumption of the Golf R was better than the R32 ... 10 -v- 12 litres / 100km.

      Cheers.

Yeah - I mentioned this a few months ago in this thread.
The thing is, that if you buy an Audi S3 new, you will pay more, have an older car from day 1, and it too will be superseeded in 2012 along with the Golf MK7 refresh.

Both the R and S3 are obviously the last of their respective series to appear though. Plus, if WhiteJames is correct and the MK7 has been delayed by 8 months, then the new A3 will be out first (unless this delay also affects the A3).

135 is in the same situation - replacement in 2011/12...

          Damn
I will cancel my order and get in line for MK7 or even 8 before I die

The MkVII may be released in 2012 in Europe, but if the MkVI release schedule is anything to go by, you can expect to add another ~18 months on top of that before the R replacement hits Australia. That gives the MkVI R a lifespan of around three years (without taking any launch delays into account).

I would suggest that if you're looking at the R and are concerned about its lifespan, consider the car on its merits today - it will be as cracking a drive in three years as it is right now. If in three years time your standards will have changed, then trade up. It won't make the MkVI R any less of a great car. The only factor that should strongly influence your decision is that of depreciation, and that's affected by the length of time you keep your car, and how you care for it.

FWIW, I don't really mind that the MKVI has a short lifespan; I plan on keeping my GTI for at least five years anyway, and think it looks fresh now and will remain so for years to come. Don't forget also that a shorter lifespan (theoretically) equals fewer models sold over that period, which means a less common model; depending on how you perceive the fluid in your glass in this case, a less common model equates to greater exclusivity.

            • My research on the net and via Aus and UK magazines indicate that the new A3 Audi is due out in Europe in late 2011 and early 2012 for Aus.

The MK7 Golf was due out in early 2012 in Europe, but has been delayed for 8 months to the end of 2012 in Europe to capitalise on the World Car of the Year and World’s Safest Vehicle awards.

Aus should see the MK7 in early 2013, with the new MK7 GTI out 6 months later in late 2013, followed by the Golf R 3-6 months later in early 2014.

A late 2013 MK7 GTI release will give me 3.0-3.5 years with the current model, which is fine by me.

MK7 power increases over the MK6 will be minimal, with Volkswagen rather concentrating on reducing fuel consumption, as they have done with the MK6 models.

Similar thing with BMW M-Power and Merc AMG ... fuel consumption will become a stronger theme rather than performance. It's becoming socially uncool to be using the world's natural resources.

Even Maserati and Ferrari indicate that they cannot continue to build vehicles that average around 20 litres plus in real world driving.

              Cheers.

                LOL

Back from Holidays and no new news here but my dealer has been told at least some of their allocations as I was offered a car today, but not close enough to the spec I want.

As for a lot of the talk in here, fark the reviews and peoples overly analytical opinions. Talk of fuel economy cracks me up. These car's sip fuel as it is, what the hell difference does 0.2L/100km make? Doesn't anyone buy cars just because they have to have it? My best and most enjoyable cars were bought on that reason alone. I'm not expecting perfection, but I know I'll be have a farken lot of fun until whatever else comes along and replaces it!

                  • Dear Dave
Amen! I must say that there seems to be quite a bit of nit picking going on here. To me the only real decision was whether I wanted a R 20 or not!. I have just sold my r36 purely because it did not, for me, measure up to my former ride and that was the mark 5 GTI.
I will probably be shot down but it just lacked the fun factor.
My order is in with the dealer and I am told that it will be here in June.......so bring it on!!!!!!!!

Thanks for that, I had not seen that pdf before so is new to me! I could've probably looked for it but 1100 odd posts to sift through!!!! this topic is hot!

Anyway looking at most of the options I'd want takes the list close to $68,000 (if working off old R32 prices subtracting leather) so my once 100% sure decision I was going to get an R is now waning and given I have a family and sometimes need space am leaning towards the R36, test drove it and love the V6 snarl. Anyway probably won't make a decision till I can see the R and drive it. Thanks guys, finding the info here useful

                              • My dealer confirmed today that the Rs are now 3 weeks away from being released .... VWA and the dealers are in the process of matching dealer pre-orders (ie. customer orders like myself) with the initial batch of Rs that have already been delivered or are on their way already.

If there is a R in the initial batches that matches your order you will have it in June ...... otherwise its a 3+month way I'm afraid.
