All the lower power/torque petrol VW/Skodas have the DQ200 7 speed DSG. This is only half the problem as the 1.4l twin charger 118 in the Golf/Jetta has been one of the least reliable engines that VW has produced.
As brad said do yourself a favour and read the threads/links before you go buying a car out of warranty.
For ~$20k you should be able to pick up a TDI wagon, Octy RS or Tiguan/Yeti with much more reliable engine/transmission and decent amount of boot/loading space.
Thanks for all the advice, I think you've prevented me from buying a Lemon.
Friend of mine recently bought a new Jetta with the 118 engine, I wonder how he'll go down the track - though at least he'll have a warrantee.
So are they using the same faulty gearbox in the new 103 TSI Golfs and Octavias? I don't get how they could still be selling a product with so many issues?
Octavia RS is top of my list, just doesn't seem to be many for sale around Brisbane. I'll have to wait for a good one to come up, but hoping to get something before the end of financial year. I should test drive a TDI also

Despite VW's denials the same problem still exists in the MK7 Golfs ..... good friend of mine with a 2014 Comfortline 90TSI DSG has the dreaded DSG issues .... had clutch packs replaced at 16000km and now at 25000km needs a full gearbox replacement!
Do not buy a DQ200 DSG equipped car 2nd hand and if you buy new plan to sell by the time the warranty runs out .....

Have any of you fitted a GFB DV+ to your car? I've tried fitting it into mine, but there's a plastic tube that gets in the way of the sensor clip of the diverted valve that's stopping it from plugging in.
Has anyone dealt with this issue? I'm still waiting for a reply from GFB. I can get a picture if needed when I get some free time.
Take a pic. I have mine to install on the same engine.
I ended up finding this thread (which was posted on the same day, talk about perfect timing) and I followed his lead in dremel-ing the plug to fit it. No damage was done to the actual sensor part inside.
With the 1.4 118 tsi vehicles I wouldnt buy anything older then 2013 personally, though they have fixed most issues a little before 2013 id have a buffer yr between.
I personally would never buy ANY DSG VW as I have seen more DSG issues then 118 issues.
Regardless I guess a 118 is a gamble, but also keep in mind that the engine code has changed which means they actually have changed some sort of the build, characteristics or materials of the engine. Older engines CAVD - Newer engines CTHD.
I guess I will find out.
Im enjoying it at the moment 12000ks in 3 months only window regulator is squecking. will fix it at 1 st service

GFB know about the issue and don't think that it would cause any damage if left stock. I had already dremeled mine and am happy to have that little bit of clearance
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
Have owned my 2010 118 TSI from new (now 60000kms on meter) and struggled with a few minor issues throughout ownership. Well maintained and drives well at present. Having read all the horror stories on this forum about engine and gearbox failures, I'm kind of thinking of moving it along before disaster strikes bigtime. Issues I've had and resolved:
1) 'Chirp" from supercharger water pump - fixed about 12 months into ownership
2) DSG and mechatronic failure - mechtronics replaced DSG reflashed (covered fully by VW about 3 months out of warranty), told cost was approx AUD 4500
3) Various recalls - 2 from memory
4) Various squeaks and rattles - one particularly bad one from the fuel pipeline tapping against the body - all fixed eventually
5) Air con compressor replaced - out of warranty
Main source of worry would be the engine or gearbox. Just wondering what other owners have done and if moving it along at the 5-6 year mark is a good option while the going is good? Or is it worth the risk of keeping and running it to the bitter end?
I've been tossing up the idea of selling too. Have always kept our cars 10yrs+ in our family but I'm getting worried with the 118tsi nearing 100k kms. I really wish I had the 147tsi jetta instead.
Thanks for the reply, have had a chat to my usual VW specialist mechanic here in Brisbane and they are advocates of selling early rather than be faced with repairs approaching the value of the car.
I can't seem to find this bit of information anywhere. Where is the intercooler located on a Mk6 118TSI? I doesn't seem to be front mounted (from what I can tell).
