Has anyone had any experience with dealers who are more desperate now its towards the end of the month with budgets/quotas to meet?
Negotiating is a two way give and take. You can't just walk in and say "I want 10% else I'm leaving", otherwise, most of the time you'll end up leaving empty handed. I'm not sure what the specification of car you are after is, but 10% may or may not be reasonable.
Also, if you're looking for a brand new car in stock (as opposed to a demo car in stock, or a factory order), then 10% is most definitely unreasonable, as with all the factory order wait times, people are quite happy to pay basically full RRP to avoid the wait.

In any case, if you are genuine and committed, give Phillip Fairhall, Brand Manager of Gerald Slaven Volkswagen in Belconnen ACT a call and tell him that I suggested you speak to him and see what he can do for you. It may mean you have to pick it up from Canberra, but then many forum members come from further than Melbourne to get their cars from him.

I am surprised you did not bridge the $250 and just closed the deal. Probably would be done if you offer to split the gap.

Have you done a lot of negotiation in the past? It is a bit of an art really.

        rvc

pretty happy with that. might not be the cheapest, but the service I get from this dealer is exceptional! In fact i bought my R32 from here too!

            MY11.5 TR 5DR GTI DSG
            Sunroof
            18" Detroits
            MDI
            Premium B/T
            RVC
            Tinted windows

$47k drive away - no Corporate Plus discount, just a straight out retail negotiation and purchase. I think its a good deal for a car in stock which I can have at the end of the week. According to the calculator thats a saving of 12.21% over retail. Very happy and appreciate the valuable intelligence gleaned from this site and the other members.

I rang a few dealers in Sydney and surrounds yesterday - most simply didn't get back to me, a couple quoted me straight full retail and weren't prepared to do any negotiation on the phone, some wanted me to come into their showrooms before they would even discuss what was in stock and only three actually engaged in price discussions with me - I got the car from the one who called me back and was prepared to talk turkey over the phone.

            Thanks.

great deal for you and you did well i would say the salesman should be sacked sounds like he just took an order over the phone of which an 18 year old on $12.00 per hour could do just as good....

the guys that wouldn't deal over the phone understand that if you were there test driving and sitting in a new car for imediate delivery they could have gotten an extra 1-2k out of you or are confident someone else will pay more.

              • Yes but if you look at it from the salesman's perspective he doesnt care what price the customer gets as long as he gets his sale and his commission he is happy.

Yes they will try and negotiate with the sales manager for the best deal for you as it is in their best interest to make a sale but dont forget that if he doesnt sell that car, someone else at the dealership will!

PS: kojarena you are lucky you only have to wait a week, ive been waiting 6 months and ive still got a week to go!

                • Exactly someone else will probably for a higher profit... Thus the salesperson should learn how to negotiate better so the sales manager actually feels comfortable passing on a lead to them.

If they stop getting leads then they will likely stop making sales.

Any way sorry to go off topic and not to discredit the purchaser who did a great job taking away their ability to neg.

                  • Dont forget it is ultimately the sales manager who approves the final price!

Not if the buyer doesn't agree and walks out the door...

I do get what you mean but sales manager is not the final approver. The dealer principal had to green light the deal to the sales manager in my case. Not sure if that is a regular thing.

                      • I actually ended the negotiations at $47,490 when the salesman said he couldnt come down another dollar. I thanked him for his time and effort and advised him I would keep looking elsewhere. It was his sales manager who called back 15mins later and continued the deal negotiation and who then got the original salesman to call me back 20mins after that to lock in the deal.

Out there in dealer-land there is a lot more going on than just profits on vehicle sales. There are sales target bonus', sales bonus' and special offer subsidies all paid by the manufacturer/importer to the DP/dealership which add up to significant amounts well above the few hundred dollars being made on the sale itself by the dealer.

I feel pretty good about the deal - they got an easy no fuss sale and I got the car I want at a good price from a dealer who was a pleasure to deal with. Ask me tomorrow or late this week if I feel the same...

                            • So went into a certain VW dealership in canberra, 50% chance of a guess since there are only two.

Was offered with corp discount (due to novated lease)

$45K ish for a 3 door, Black DSG, Leather, Sunroof
                              $51,500 for a 5 door, DSG, leather,sunroof, mdi and 18's

I didn't bargain/barter, just wanted to see initial prices and so forth.

After reading up on here the prices ascertained sans corporate discount makes me think that I could be getting so much better. I would be willing to wait a couple of months if it meant getting the new headlights.

Am essentially looking for 3 Door GTi/DSG/CW at a minimum with like to have
                              xenon/leather/sunroof/rvc.

I have a bit more of a look and a talk to the dealer this weekend and also have a talk to the other VW in Canberra. Given the novated leasing 45K would be my max, and with some of the deals on this thread, I think a lot better could be had.

                              • The RRP for a 3 door GTI DSG with NO options on the road is ~$45,777 - so the fact you can get "$45K ish" for metallic paint, leather and sunroof, is already an excellent deal. The 5 door one, is alright... so unless you have missed something from the 5 door car, it's obvious which one they'd prefer to sell you.

But given the excellent price on the 3 door they've already got, I don't think you'll get Xenons in there as well (removal of metallic paint is offset by RVC which cost the same). That's just too much of a large % discount without the "LCT discounting assistance" of a more spec'ed up car.

On the 5 door yes, on the 3 door no - I think you've misinterpreted something to come to that conclusion. Put it this way, IF you were able to get that 3 door car with the Xenons for $45k flat, that would be the largest % discount we've EVER seen on a car of such a low RRP....
