  • I was told end of March or worst case, first week of April. This works fine for me as I plan on throwing a further $5k down and only financing the $50k.

With the cable, they had a cable there but not the one that they sell. It's the cable that goes form the unit to the cable they sell (which connects to your device). That system cable was a VW connection (for the unit) to USB. Now my iPhone cable is USD to iPhone connection so I dont see why I would need another special cable. They were throwing around a figure of $90 for this cable but i've read of others getting it for $70 on here.

    • I am pretty sure you need the ipod mdi cable for it to work. I just use a sd card to me the songs sound better off the sd than from the ipod it is quite a noticeable improvement.

      • Yeah I fell into that trap got the MDI and thought the standard USB will do, damn thing doesnt work, so now I've got the iPod MDI cable on order... pain in the arse.

        • Yes. I agree with you. I don't understand if the USB is standard why they also make special ipod cable and sell it for $$. Maybe the standard USB don't charge ipods? Who knows.

            • Question. Does the Navigation unit have television?

              I noticed a Media button. Can I watch DVD's?

Sorry I know I should've asked about this today but it just came to mind.

              • Not sure about TV, and to be honest I wouldn't thinks so, but the Media button is for the MDI input isnt it?

                happy to be corrected

The TV tuner is $2000+ option on AUDIs. I don't think Golf will have this feature on RNS510. DVD feature only works when the car is not moving.

                  • I wonder if there is a way to enable the DVD while driving function.

I remember in my 06 TT when I installed my Pioneer stereo the installer said he'd enabled it to play while driving.

While I know its a 'stupid' idea to many - in my TT it wasn't an issue for the 2 years I had it. It's for passengers anyway.

                    • Congrats on the purchase elisiX! Would you be able to elaborate a little bit more on the comparison between the 370z and the Golf? The 370z will be under consideration when I'm in for an upgrade

                      • Well it's hard to explain really.. I tried to in my first post. I guess that was more of a drive experience explanation.

They are two very different cars. If I were to discuss this on a 370Z forum, i'd got all sorts of abuse perhaps. For me - it just wasn't the right car. I basically took a budget and looked at everything in the price range. The GTI, though cheaper, stood out. I mean look at the options in the 65-75k range. Zed, 135i, upcoming R20, S3 etc etc. There is so much to choose from and they are all some serious cars.

2+ years ago and further back, my driving was much different to what it is now. Back then i'd be going to long drives on my own, throwing whatever car I had about the road like a madman. These days, i'd never treat the car in that manner on the road and with my very long term girl on board. This doesn't mean I dont mind the odd squirt to the speed limit. lol.

I drive to work.. Sydney traffic. What good is the brute force of the 370Z in that environment. It'd eat petrol to boot. And I suppose the final reason was the practicality of the two cars. I've since got used to having a hatch with the Mazda SP23. It's incredibly convenient and i'd hate to be in a situation where I couldn't give my sister a lift home or something along those lines cause I simply lacked seats.

Maybe i'm just getting older (lol i'm 27), or maybe I just dont care for going sideways at every turn anymore. In the end, spending between 10-15k less than I had budgeted for means I can do more good with that money. The whole reason I downsized from 80k vehicles in the first place 2 years back was to be smarter with my income. I think I made the right decision.

                        • Have to agree, I can't think of any car that gives you more bang for buck and has the quality or feel of the Golf.

It's one very tidy little package for the money, and just enough get up and go to make like interesting when you want but economical and pratical enough for the very day commute.

It is only my first Golf, and I've only had it for a month but yes I already....

Insert the DVD then start driving untill the screen goes blank. Stop the car and press the "i" button on the top right of the unit then press the "tone" button, you should hear a chime sound and then you are good to start driving

                            Enjoy

So this will work on the standard stereo, or do you require the Sat Nav option?
