Road trip - 2000 plus kms in brand new GTI
Over 2000 kms of driving on my own and I loved every minute of it. Never been sorry to finish a long trip in a car before.
Drove to Melbourne for work, lots of city stop-start driving during the week and then home via the Great Ocean Road and did not find any significant faults with the car.
The DGS worked flawlessly on sloping starts, creeping in traffic, reversing. Could not find any of the problems I have seen raised by others. In drive it does shift to 5th and 6th very early which is good for fuel consumption but not ideal for me. Easy to override with paddle shifts if you prefer higher revs but this is not really necessary as the engine has plenty of pull from quite low revs.
Broke the plug on the MDI iPod interface cable and was unable to convince Melbourne dealer to replace it under warranty. I have a big old chunky iPod and it does not fit well in the limited space under the armrest - lean on the armrest and you place pressure on the iPod plug end of the interface and...bing...there goes $83. As you can drive all iPod functions from the RNS, I think the glovebox connector would be a better option if you have a choice.
Car handled and went brilliantly on the Great Ocean Road. Used Sport mode briefly but preferred to paddle shift at slightly lower revs to spare the brand new engine. Lots of sensational corners on that road. In Drive the DSG seems to recognise that you are pressing on if you are using the paddle shifters and it stops doing the city shifts to 6th at under 60 km/hr. Nothing like a sweet exhaust note bouncing off the cliffs.
Despite giving the car a bit of stick at times and all the stop start city driving, still managed average fuel consumption of 7.7 litres/100. Interesting to play with the real time fuel consumption. According to the MDI, fuel consumption improves a surprising amount when you turn the aircon off. I ran the aircon pretty much the whole time as it was pretty hot for the whole week.
Slow learner at the gas pumps - need to identify the right branding for 95 fuel. It would be easier if all the gas companies used the same identifiers. Some don't have the RON rating anywhere on the pump that I could see. Pulled up to the 98 pump a few times.
Had a pretty good run with the traffic but got stuck behind a hay truck through some windy bits and it was shedding its load so fast that it probably arrived at its destination empty. Wound up with quite a few stalks in the lower grill. Spent a short time stuck behind a wind generator blade. The size of a single blade is massive. Needed a special long hauler and police escort front and back.
I still have a lot to learn about the car. Will have to RTFM. Had some issues with controlling the sat nav that I have not worked out through trial and error.
18s were fine even on rougher road surfaces. The car sits very solidly on the road like a much bigger and heavier car. Don't get buffeted around nearly as much overtaking semis etc as I did in my old Honda. At open speed limits, the car is extremely quiet.

Was out today with the boys from the GTG drive over at :
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showth...72#post2118072
Awsome drive down the coast road to Berry and up through the hills (mountains?) no idea where we were but fantastic windy roads, no better place to get familiar with the new car.
And Anthony's 434bhp (at the wheels) R32, wow what a monster!!

Looks ace.
The red looks slightly dull but it could be the bright light in the photos.
The wheels look tiny on the Mk6.
Can see why they made them into 18's as an option.

2010 GTI - Ordered!
Hi All,
I've just got home from ordering a new 2010 VW GTI I am pleased to say.
In the past I've owned quite a few cars but some of the more sports oriented were the 2004 Monaro and a 2006 Audi TT Quattro. Currently we're driving a 2008 Mazda 3 SP23 as we'd bought a second property at the time and downsized. Looking for a new car this time was really difficult. Do I buy another big ass sports coupe or a pocket rocket. Now the SP23 is certainly no rocket, but its an incredible little package for the money and has suited us fine till now.
We drove the Nissan 370Z back to back with the GTI today (I know 2 very different vehicles) and the GTI was the standout for me by far. While the 370Z had the outright brutal force, it felt way too floaty on the road in general conditions compared to the GTI. Now I know the steering stiffens up at speed in the 370Z, but I just didnt feel as confident on the road as I did with the GTI. The GTI will be tuned (APR most likely as was my TT) so it is currently and will certainly be no slouch. The GTI overall just felt more stable on the road.
Anyway, ill update the prices thread for all the others out there but here is my spec.
Volkswagen Golf GTI
2010 Build - 5 Door
DSG Transmission
Leather Interior
Metallic Paint
18" Detriot Wheels
Bi-Xenon Headlamps
Electric Sunroof
Satellite Navigation
MDI
Premium Plates
Full Tank
175k/6YR Warranty
$57k Driveaway.
Question. They wanted to sell me the cable for the MDI but when I looked at the attachment from the unit (which you plug into), it looked like a standard USD connection. Now I use an iPhone and already have an iPhone connection to USB connection cable. Is this what they would essentially be selling me or will I still need to pick one up?
Thanks All. Now the wait until March 2010!2019 BMW M3 CS

Congratulations! As I known, the MDI only comes with a USB cable, ipod cable is sold separately. $80? I remember that's what my dealer told me. Did they tell you the car will come in March? I ordered mine one month ago and was told one week ago the car will be here in the middle of April.Golf GTI MKVI | Carbon Steel Gray | 5DR | DSG | Bi-Xenon | 18" Detroit | MDI |
