The thing is, we can't know, you may already be getting a great price - if the dealer only offered you $14000 for your trade in, but offered you the car for $44500, your changeover price is exactly the same but your discount would be around 17-18%, which is fantastic.

What you could do is tell the dealer you *may* have a potential private buyer, and could the dealer do a better price with no trade in. This will give you a better picture of what discount you're actually getting.

              • By the way, 8.7% with no corporate discount is still pretty good.

                  • OK I got one quote so far

                    118 TSI DSG
                    + paint (500rrp)
                    + sports package cloth (2000rrp)
                    + park assist (1400rrp)
                    + everything else (onroads/gst/etc)

                    Total ~38,000

                    Isn't that _really_ expensive??

                    Dze.

So the 118TSI is $31,990 to start with.
                      The "everything else" includes:
Dealer Delivery - Typically $2495 in WA (according the VW Australia's price guide anyway)
Stamp duty is $1,571.95 as per here
Rego + CTP is $492.52 (If I've calculated that right from here and here
Plates are $17.90 for standard or $410 for Euro.

So when you add that up, the drive away price is $40,467.38 with standard plates or $40,859.48 with Euro plates.
                      Meaning you're getting a 6.10% or 7.0% discount.
                      Nothing wrong with that?!

                      • You should be able to do better, aim for about $36k. Ask for corporate discount.

There is an offer you can't refuse. $2k saved with no sweat. Similar prices to the EOFYS. Thanks Dermot.

Thats a 11+% discount which is getting right up there.

As for expensive that's you call. Maybe yolu could drive it's nearest competitor SP25 (auto) and then the 1118TSI. Not as refined but getting better. IMHO the Golf seems cheap compared to an A3 1.4 or a 1 series with a better performance/ride and interior than both.

The GTI Price Calculator 2010 from this forum indicates RRP Drive Away Price of $53,857. How much discount should I be able to negotiate with the dealer?

                              • yea, i have looked at that. a 5dr dsg R would be $59155 RRP (again using the brilliant calculators from this forum) if i dropped the leather and reversing camera (but keep the stereo upgrade and dongle - must have music!). the forums suggest getting discount on the R is tough, but more likely to be able to negotiate on the gti. anybody have any experience here that would help? 7% discount would get the gti below $50k. is that a reasonable target, given i don't have corporate discount, etc?

                                thx
