Is this possible? There seems to be very little time between it being built and the car being available for delivery.

How long does it take for a vessle to sale from Germany to Australia?
My car took about 6-7 weeks to ship once on the boat however there can be variance because there are a few different routes available. Then once it hit Melbourne, took a further 2 and a bit weeks to deliver. Given that you are in SA, it's then got to be put on another truck from Melbourne and sent over to your dealer which will cause further delay. As SChan has said, April is a more reasonable deadline given the Build week indicated.

Just out of interest, when did you order?

    • First signed on the dotted line in late July. Then changed the spec and signed new contract late October.

I would have thought the dealer would put a realistic date on the ETA so as not to get harrassed by the customer.

Similar thing happened with me too!

I ordered on July 16th but after a month or so i asked for a built year 2012 GTI and so the new ETA is circa April 2012. For the original order the delivery date was 29th Feb 2012.
Sorry to break ur heart mate but i do not think you will get the car by Feb 2012.
Good luck and do not worry there are many more like you and me...

        • Im in the same boat, I ordered mine mid august with a delivery date early february, I now have a week 5 build date and a delivery date of march/april which is 2 months later then I expected, needless to say I wasn't very impressed when I was told that.

Look at the positive side of it mate, you are going to get a built year 2012 car and not 2011 built... something to be happy about!

            • I'm shattered! That's 2 more months of waiting plus I've sold my car.

              Not happy Jan!

              • Just to give you an SA opinion on things. My car was built early September and was due to have been delivered by early November but unfortunately there has been some transport damage and I'm still waiting but should be before December. So a two month turn around is possible if everything goes smoothly and your dealer puts priority on everything along the chain when it arrives in port. My dealer went behind my back and pushed for an earlier build but I think now that you've got a build week allocated, there is no other way to get it faster unless there is one already coming with your specs which you can grab.

Sorry to hear about the missed target of feb but I think late march/early April is very achievable.

                • Right. After refusing to do the tracking thing (prefering to hide in a hole) I got cc'd into an email between the dealer and the finance people. There is the VIN glaring at me to do it. A quick cut & paste later...

It's on the FIDELIO. Currently on it's way out of Baltimore and due in Melbourne 6th January. Now I'll be checking the damn thing every day.

It should make it from Melbourne to Wodonga by the 24th Jan. Shouldn't it?

Guys, I thought I respond to this on behalf of dealer perspective....

Volkswagen is riding on a high in terms of demand world wide at the moment for most models and there are build restrictions. This means all countries are on a "fair-share" offer system. Australia gets a small share of the "pie" and once our share is allocated, orders are getting bumped into the next build allocation.
We as dealerships try to give you an educatad forcast on when your vehicle will be arriving in Australia, it is in our own interest to be conservative - and most dealers will be. It is however sometimes out of our hand hwen things go "pearshaped". Model Year changes & introductions of new model lines often have an impact, material shortages due to demand (such as the DSG gear box), parts supply problems (rear view cameras due to the tsunami in Japan), strikes, stormy seas, train derailments, transport damage are all out-side influences which we can't control. I had a customer who first ordered a Caravelle and we advised that it will be a 6 months factory order. Suddenly the factory closed for a re-fit for the new model year and there was a delay. When the Caravelle was finally built, the ship was delayd due to unknown reasons for about a week. When it finally made it's journey to W.A. from over East the train derailed near Kalgoorlie! 12 months had passed from order and the car was a write-off...
The only way to get an accurate time for your car is when you buy "out of stock", as the car is already in our posession. Any factory order is & always will be an "educated guess" based on the guidelines given to the dealerships by VGA.

Volkswagen is a great product and it looks like we are 2 years ahead of overtaking Toyota as number one manufracturer. Aditional factories will be coming on line and some of the production is moved to factories which are not running at full capacity, so Volkswagen is actively trying to improve the supply sitiation.

                    • Emailed my dealer today and was happy to receive a reply that car was in the production final checks phase and should be in Aus Jan 21st. He gave a chassis number so I put it in the tracking link just to see what would happen. Turns out my car is already in Southampton! So cool the detail you can see. Funny how time seems to go quicker toward the end, after all the wait it will be here before I'm ready if I'm not careful!

                              • Guys,

I just received an email from the dealer about my MY/BY 2012 GTI. I have been given week 4 build date and ETA mid April. Do you guys think it is possible to get the car by April?
Appreciate any input and thanks in advance.

                                Cheers,
