I understand that Tirerack are cheap but how much do they charge for delivery (x4) to Australia (Sydney)?

~$250 for 2 or ~$270 for 4.

225/40x18 Michelin PS2 should sneak in under the $1000 limit providing the AUD doesn't drop again. There are cheaper alternatives that will be almost as good.

I just checked on tirerack.

For under $1000 you can get basically any tyre on there. Even Michelin Pilot Super Sports are under $1000US. Without shipping they are at around $870 for 4.

Conti Sport Contact 3's come in at $782 AUD for 4. Or $195.50 each.

Can anyone advise whether having 255/35/20 on the new Tig will put out the speedo? My understanding is that it will but only marginally (1-3km), providing I don't go any higher in the profile (ie. 40-45)??

You would need to dial the sizes into a calculator like on 1010tyres.com to make sure.

Anyone running 18x8 (~ET50) wheels on a Golf R (stock suspension) with 235/40 profile tyres? The OEM 225/40/18 fitment excludes the use of AD08, RS3 etc due to load rating while 235/40 doesn't.

Seeing how 235/35 R19 is a factory option on the R, then 235/40 R18 should also be fine since they are very similar in diameter and rolling circumference - or so the theory goes... reality tends to throw the odd curveball or two.

However, the main problem is that 235/40 R18 is only approved for these rim widths : 8.0J, 8.5J, 9.0J, 9.5J

AFAIK the R comes equipped with 7.5 x 18 wheels, so unless you buy some new 8.0 x 18 wheels as well, you won't be able to fit them legit.



Have you considered the following?

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 (225/40 R18 92W XL)
Kumho Ecsta XS i.e. KU36 (225/40 R18 92W XL)
Toyo Proxes R888 (225/40 R18 92Y XL)

Tire Rack doesn't appear sell Toyo tyres, but nonetheless has the required load index, so perhaps something to keep in mind when shopping around.

Yeh the numbers line up for the size comparison but I'm told 245/40 on an 18x8 will most likely rub without some camber adjustment on the rear and they're not that much bigger than the 235's so didn't want to be a pioneer.

I don't have any 18's now and if I get a set, they'll be 18x8 so no problems on the width front.

Don't want to run a full semi like the R888 as I doubt they'll get much mileage or be any good when it rains (is Melbourne after all). I could run the RE-11 in the OEM 19" size but selling them and moving to 18's wont cost me much if at all and in the process I gain more tyre options and shed some unsprung weight.

Anyway don't need anymore ideas to confuse me hehe, just gotta lock in what size will fit

Ah that's right, reading back a couple of posts, now I remember where you stand (re: speed index and insurance).

Regarding tyre options, I'm afraid VW specify a speed index of Y for the factory 18's as well (i.e. 225/40 R18 92Y XL) so that doesn't open up any options - even for 235/40 R18 tyres.

It's not until you get down to 17's that VW relax a bit and specify a speed index of W (i.e. 225/45 R17 91W).

That is, if you still give a toss what the insurance company says.

Not fussed on the speed rating anymore after talking to a Vicroads compliance guy today who pointed me to this doco. Have to abide by the min load rating on the tyre placard which is 91 (can ignore the 92 specified for 18's) and have to be the lesser of 180km/h (S) or top speed. So 270 (W) which most tyres seem to be is fine.

Insurance says they consider legal whatever vicroads says is RWC so safe there if the above is correct.

I ordered a set of Goodyear Eagle asym F1 for my golf R from tirerack, arrived in 7 days which is pro. Cost me little over $1000 including shipping, I would have purchased the F2 but that tyre is not available in the size I wanted.

I'll be getting the F2 come replacement time.

Don't blame the tyre retailers. It's the wholesalers that are gouging the market. The tyre fitters can't buy them from the importer for the price we pay on the open market.
