18'X8, 5X112,45ET should fit, make sure hub centric rings are included if the wheels are not 57.1 in bore diameter.

but, why would you put SUV Audi Q7 reps on a Golf???

but 225 40 18 tyres are more expensive than 225 45 17.

Firstly , the offset will need to be right and they will need to sit under without rubbing and look in proportion to the car. Not entirely sure of that answer yet ... just thinking it through.

Secondly they (to me) look like a larger version of my stock wheel today and may give the car a little more presence... wanky I know but we all customize cars to our own liking I guess.

Thirdly , they may look good if I have them, professionally blackened with a mat / satin finish.....

There is probably no real performance / handling benefit , in fact they would probably put greater stress on the power steering I would assume?

Just thinking it through, anyone can photoshop a white gold with these ???

I've gone from a set of 050's to Michelin PSS. It was on my non VW car, but it seriously transformed the handling and ride qualities for the better. The grip on the PSS in the dry is excellent and I get much less wheel spin in damn conditions than on the 050.

The PSS are supposed to have a decent wear rate value (from memory - 300).

Like most have said, whatever you decide to do, get the best tyres you can afford.

I purchased from Tire Rack in the US - its much more competitive than most Australian tyre retailers.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with getting a 'performance tyre' irrespective of whether you drive hard or not, its about the once a year emergency situation that could make the difference.

Hey fatboy - just on purchasing from Tire Rack. I am keen to do this as well. How did you end up getting them fitted? Is it difficult to convince any standard tyre store to get them to fit tyres you haven't bought from them?

Why would that even be an issue? People remove and fit tyres all the time for any number of reasons. They will just charge a flat fee

a friend of mine got quoted $200 just to strip, fit and balance 4 corners when he told them the tyres were Michelin PSS, at Spinning Wheels. off course he went somewhere else.

i got ripped off by Jacquickfit Merrylands once too, when they saw the wheels they were fitting onto were Rays. got quoted $140 to strip, fit and balance 4 wheels, incl wheel alignment. then i cancelled the alignment because the mechanic said it was possible to damage the rims with their wheel alignment machine, but the owner insisted that I still pay $140 anyway! I did't want to argue and paid it, but will definitely never come back and won't recommend to anyone.

some tyre shops are not too happy when they know you import tyres yourself. some claim they can price match but when you tell them to price match Tempe Tyres, they won't do it and they claim Tempe do parallel imports / no warranty / etc..

some want to charge you extra when they see expensive wheels too.

It all depends on your perspective....

I have only bought cheap tyres ONCE and regretted it the first time it rained!!!!
Admittedly is wasn't in my current GTI ( was a V6 Camry....don't laugh ;P )
They were $79 each Diamondback tyres from Kmart....they were ****E!!!
No grip in the wet and I would get wheelspin from any sort of half decent stab at the accelerator...even in the dry!!
Never again!!!

I once bought a GTR from a workmate...he got a roadworthy, and the front tyres failed despite having heaps of tread - it had very low kms. We'd already agreed the price, so he thought he'd just throw 2 new tyres in - unfortunately, cheap tyres. Result - understeer.

It also caused another problem requiring swapping the front and back tyres...Result - Oversteer!!! Obviously a GTR needs a balanced set of tyres, and good ones....but, as long as you drive to the limits of the car and its configuration - and always leave space for emergencies rather than assume your tyres will "save you", you can have some real fun with crap tyres... There was one particular freeway entrance ramp, with increasing radius bends, that just loved having a GTR with crap rear tyres punt around at the speed limit(ish) with a controlled power slide.

After a while, I got bored with this, and put a set of Falkens on. They had great grip (a GTR can really test grips levels), quieter than the Bridgestones on practically any surface, and lasted pretty well.

The point is, people will say that you should always buy the best tyres available for your car, because your life depends on that tiny contact patch with the road. That gives you a false sense of security. You should always buy tyres that will do the job, learn their limits, and drive within those limits. That's what racing drivers try to do, but they keep much closer to the limit, and they test the limit a bit more. Obviously, if you can afford good tyres, that's what you'll do...YMMV

I didnt have any issues getting a tyreshop to fit them and the fee they charged was to balance them and a small amount per corner... For those Melbourne based, then Tyrepower North Melbourne are your people. I know them from the BMW forums and they are great chaps.

I'd keep looking for a shop which will do it if you are being asked too high a price.

Any more than $20 per corner for strip/fit/balance & disposal fee & they probably aren't over keen to get your business. Some tyre places will do anything for money (esp cash), others would rather sweep the floor of the workshop.

Seriously, my treads are wearing and I just got a price to replace the Conti's - which I love by the way - at $590 each......
the guy also recommended Pzero Rosso ($389) or Pzero Nero ($530).

Anyone changed treads and got recomendations (either to get or avoid!)

Nothing to stop you posting in that (now this) thread with your question! And there is plenty of talk on sizes up to 18" - the standard R fitment.

It varies and you need to email them for a quote. I paid ~$300 for shipping of four tyres (225/40/R18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric) to Adelaide.
