Although i'm not exactly sure how much this discount equated to, 6 to 8% I think. Every dealer told me something different so who knows? I still had to bargain my ass offf to get 12% off though. Best of luck
Wonder if I'd get the same discount for the Police Association (Union)?

If you do a lot of Kms per year then the fuel economy of the TDI makes it cheaper to own over several years. If you are really looking at saving $$$ then you need to look at the total "cost of ownership", including depreciation, insurance, servicing, consumables such as tyres, brake pads and discs etc etc. Also most petrol VWs run better on 98 octane petrol, which is much dearer than std ULP.

If you are considering buying a new VW then you aren't looking at low budget cars anyway. If I was buying a small/medium hatch back mainly on the whole of life cost basis I'd look seriously at a Honda Jazz, and maybe a few other asian cars.

Some repairs on VWs can be both too common and too expensive (eg aircon, turbos on TDIs), so many people either turn over their cars before the warranty runs out or buy the VW extended warranty.

My usual advice is to take each contender for a decent test drive (preferably on the same roads), and buy the one you like best. Everyone has different preferences and priorities, so what is best for me may be totally unsuitable for you.

If you are looking at driving a TDI in lots of heavy traffic make sure you try a DSG version as well as a manual, and research DPF regeneration too.

The more info you have the better the decision you can make.
I am still tossing up between a Mazda 3 and the golf.... lots of things to consider. How much does a new turbo cost? Whatever I buy, I want to hang on to it - can't afford to swap cars every 3 or so years. Would you say not to buy a golf if you want to hang on to it past it's warranty date?

You can extend the warranty out an extra 3 yrs, which might be worthwhile if keeping the car for 5 or 6 yrs.

        • I'm talking about keeping a car... well, let's just say I cant predict if and when I could trade again. Surely a car should be reliable outside the warranty period. You shouldn't be forced to trade merely because your car is outside of warranty.
I would hope a car of this stature would be reliable for years to come and not cost me a bucket just because it's past warranty date.

          • Seriously though, ANY car which has a component failure after warranty can cost you a heap. I mean, Honda's servicing prices are not exactly wonderful either! They're on another level compared to Toyota. I haven't had a friend with a Mazda for a while, so I'm not sure how they compare these days. But it's always hard to compare 'reliability' of one make and model to another based on forums. People will always post about their problems. But people won't post about "hey, 6 years, all good". I'm not really we have any statistics around to say whether the MKV/MK6 is going to be less reliable than the current Mazda 3 etc.

              • I have just been down to Barloworld and test driven the Golf VI 118tsi manual. Lovely spirited car, fun to drive! Planning to start negotiations next week.
I'm hoping to get one in manual, candy white - with tint, fog lights and mats thrown in. What do you think I could get him down to before my trade in? Planning to use corp discount if they acknowledge the Police Association.

My beetle is currently valued at between $11200 and 13000 (but this based on a car having driven 20000k's per annum). Mine has done less that 10000 per annum, and also has sunroof and alloys.

Do you think I have any chance of changeover being under $18,000?
(after all, I am getting an '09 plated car leading into 2010!)

                • Sooner you do it the better IMO, that car just won Drive Car Of The Year 2009. Demand and hence price will rise...

To counter this the import tariff reduction of 5% from 1 Jan is around the corner, not that VW have committed to passing it on...

                  • Hey guys,
Got a quote on a GTI VI , with upgraded 18" wheels and bluetooth and was quoted $43990, otherwise everything else was standard. Is there room to knock the dealer down on price with this kind of quote?
                    thanks guys

I put that config to ~$64500 otr in NSW (based on 'premium bluetooth and without the cost of the extended warranty, since I don't know what VW charge for that). If you were able to get that for $56k drive away, then you'd be doing well! (and if you do, let me know the name of the salesman so I can buy my Golf R from him! hehe).
