Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I used "niteshadez" from Autobarn with some "powerplus" clear coat over that. The gloss isn't perfect as I actually followed the instructions for once and applied several light coats; it's a bit speckly. You willneed to get fairly complete coverage in coat.

Still, it looks pretty good. Since those pics I put another coat of tint on (having taped over the circles where the actual lights are), rubbed them back with some very fine wet and dry sandpaper and coated them with clear. Unless you looked very close you wouldn't know they weren't OEM.

    • I did that on my aftermarket taillight.. but my result was far from good

I'm gonna be trying to smoke the indicators in the side mirrors.

Ok cheers Benno.. You wouldn't be able to post some pics of the final product would you? I really want to smoke my tail lights but not sure if the risk of me screwing it up is worth it...

                • I got my MKV back today after being repaired.
A few weeks ago a woman in a 4WD turned into me. Here was the damage:

It went in for repairs last monday, got it back today after a small wait for parts. While it was in I got the handles and strips colour coded and I think its come out really well.

So I'm finally reunited with my Dub!
It was only gone nearly 2 weeks but I really missed it.

                    • Chuck a set of rs4 replicas on your mum's car and she'll be set...hehe

No the front isn't colour coded I've left them black.

I've got plans for the front eventually. Just need to save up some money. I plan on getting gti headlights (or atleast the darkened housings) and perhaps do something with the grill. Make it blend in a bit

                        • Alright, new pics, as promised.

Crappy iPhone pics, the tail lights actually look a bit darker than they appear in the pics. And the actual light parts don't seem as distinct in real life.

                            • Attached some plate protectors (not the spongy type, had bad experience with those)..:

I'm going to reorder the plates so they don't have the holes in them...

The front ones are an absolute pain to get on as the the screw wouldn't stay in the thread.. Wouldn't be surprised if they're not there next time I go for a drive.

All up they cost $38.50 from Brisbane BMW. The rear case was different to the front as it had a backing.. And the matching case to the slimline had "Brisbane BMW" written on it.. Now i'm going to wait for VWWA to create super small stickers so I can stick it on the slogan area of the rear case
